Nelly Korda should gain inspiration from something Scottie Scheffler said about Rory McIlroy after the Northern Irishman won the Masters in April.
Scheffler and McIlroy are the best two male golfers on the planet, and it is not even close.
Meanwhile, in the women’s game, Korda was world number one from March 2024 up until August of this year, when Jeeno Thitikul leapfrogged her in the standings.
The 27-year-old from Bradenton, Florida, won seven times last season, but is without a victory in 17 starts this year.
Incredibly, up until July Korda had actually improved on the LPGA Tour when it came to her average score and strokes gained total stats.
The American has fallen slightly off the boil since then, but she is still averaging under 70 in every round she plays with a strokes gained total tally of +2.33 per round.
So how does she make those marginal gains to help her regain the world number one spot from Thitikul and to get her back inside the winner’s circle?

Korda is a big admirer of Scheffler, and she needs to look very closely at something he said back in May in order to find the extra motivation required to rediscover her very best form.
What Scottie Scheffler said after Rory McIlroy won The Masters
Scheffler, the gentleman that he is, looked genuinely happy for McIlroy when he placed the green jacket on his shoulders at Augusta National back in April.
However, a fire was quite clearly burning inside the American.
When speaking to reporters after his first win of the season at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May, Scheffler highlighted how McIlroy’s Masters win motivated him to work even harder on his game.
“I think any time somebody has beaten any of us out here, I think we’re all — I guess you could say inspired, but I think we’re all fired up to come out here and compete. I think that’s what’s great about our game. Week in and week out, we get to come out here and compete. This week I was the best player. I have the week off, and we’ll see the week after who is the best player at the PGA.
“Rory has been playing some tremendous golf this year. The career grand slam was really special to watch. I was glad to be able to be there for it. I think any time you’re getting beat, you’re always fired up just a little bit extra to go out and practice. I feel like my game is trending in a good direction. I’m excited to start the rest of the season.“

Remember, McIlroy had already won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and THE PLAYERS Championship before his Masters triumph.
Meanwhile, Scheffler was struggling with his game, by his high standards, and everyone thought McIlroy was set to jump above him in the world rankings.
However, the 29-year-old from Dallas, Texas, then went on an unbelievable run of form from April onwards.
He won six times in 13 starts after The Masters, including two major championships, and he never once finished outside the top eight.
Scheffler’s lead at the top of the world rankings stands at nearly nine points right now, with McIlroy in second.
Back in April, nobody would have predicted that would be the case come October.
Nelly Korda needs to take inspiration from Scottie Scheffler’s comments
Korda needs to go back to the drawing board and figure out why she hasn’t won this year. Perhaps it is just a case of needing that extra bit of motivation to go out and practice even harder on her game.
Korda will be desperate to add to her 15 career wins and, of course, her two major championship triumphs.
Her stats this year have been exceptionally good, and any other year she may have won two or three times.
Winning on the LPGA Tour is incredibly difficult. There are hundreds of talented youngsters coming onto the scene every single year.
Korda has to find a way of maintaining her edge not only over them, but over her current competitors like Thitikul as well.
The Floridian has been overtaken at the top of the world rankings now and who knows, perhaps that was exactly what she needed.
Korda just needs to look at how dominant Scheffler was after McIlroy won The Masters to gain inspiration for what the future may have in store for her.
