Luke Donald will have been among the parties invested in The Open Championship, with many potential European Ryder Cup players having taken part.
Only Rory McIlroy has qualified for the European team for the Ryder Cup, which takes place at Bethpage Black in September.
He finished T7 at Royal Portrush in the final major championship of 2025, with Scottie Scheffler clinching the Claret Jug.
The Open Championship winner now has four wins this season, overtaking the three of his closest rival McIlroy.
Like the Northern Irishman, Scheffler is the only American to have qualified for the next edition of the Ryder Cup.

Luke Donald sent Ryder Cup warning as Scottie Scheffler wins The Open
Scheffler’s dominance in itself is a concern for Donald and his team, with the world number one looking unstoppable on the course.
But the Ryder Cup is, of course, bigger than just one player, with the Americans needing to come together as a whole to defeat a European side that was very united in 2023.
But Scheffler’s success does represent a big turnaround from American players in general, who have now won the last three major tournaments after McIlroy triumphed at The Masters.
And it was incidentally a clean sweep for such players last year, with Scheffler clinching the green jacket as Xander Schauffele won the PGA Championship and The Open, while Bryson DeChambeau took the US Open.
Their latest dominance should be of concern to Donald, who would have liked at least an even split in a Ryder Cup year, and particularly one on away soil where a hostile atmosphere can be expected.
Worrying PGA Tour trend continues for Team Europe before the Ryder Cup
To add to Donald’s worries, Scheffler was immediately followed in the leaderboard by a handful of potential American Ryder Cup players.
Harris English finished solo second and Chris Gotterup took solo third, while Wyndham Clark joined European Matt Fitzpatrick in T4.
The Englishman was the highest European player in the leaderboard, followed by McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre.
Scheffler’s victory also continues a wider trend on the PGA Tour, with his victory representing yet another American success.
Just like the major championship season, European players outshone their American rivals in the early stages of 2025.
Sepp Straka, Thomas Detry, Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland were among the early winners, joining the standout figure McIlroy.
| Rank | Player | Wins |
| 1 | Scottie Scheffler (USA) | 4 |
| 2 | Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) | 3 |
| =3 | Brian Campbell (USA) | 2 |
| =3 | Ryan Fox (New Zealand) | 2 |
| =3 | Ben Griffin (USA) | 2 |
| =3 | Sepp Straka (Austria) | 2 |
But the tide has turned more recently, with Gotterup, Brian Harman, Justin Thomas, Ben Griffin and Scheffler among those ensuring American success.
Team captain Bradley has even got in on the act, with European players now playing catch-up at a significant stage of the season as the Ryder Cup rapidly approaches.
