When it comes to golf’s greatest-ever courses, Augusta National Golf Club is always in the conversation.

Synonymous with The Masters, Augusta has played host to countless unforgettable golfing moments over the years.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is the current Masters champion, having won the major for a second time in April this year.

Scheffler is one of several Americans to win the competition on home soil, with foreign champions including the likes of legendary figures Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Gary Player.

The trio are all multiple Masters champions, but it is American Jack Nicklaus who boasts the most titles, having won the major a stunning six times.

How Nick Price clinched the Augusta National course record at the Masters

But there is one former player who holds a special place in the tournament’s history, despite never winning the Green Jacket.

And that is Nick Price, who carded a nine-under 63 in the third round of the 1986 Masters, which Nicklaus went on to win for the final time in his career.

It was also his last-ever major success, but Price hit the headlines for his round three display, with the Zimbabwean securing the course record at Augusta National.

Remarkably, not only did Price barely make the cut, he started his record-breaking third round with a bogey.

But the Zimbabwean finished with 10 birdies, beating Lloyd Mangrum’s course record set in 1940 by one stroke, before going on to finish fifth at Augusta.

Greg Norman matches Nick Price Masters record

Despite never winning the Masters, Price enjoyed a superb career, having twice won the PGA Championship and having lifted the Claret Jug at The Open Championship.

Greg Norman, who now backs the rival LIV Golf tour, did manage to equal Price’s feat a decade later, with the Australian shooting 63 in the opening round of the 1996 Masters.

Like Price, Norman couldn’t go on to win the tournament, with Nick Faldo securing his third Masters and his sixth and final major title.

Coming close to the record in the years that have followed are the likes of Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, who carded 64s in 2018 and 2022 respectively.

It remains to be seen if the Augusta National record can be broken in the near future, but it certainly mustn’t be ruled out given the stunning PGA Tour season that current Green Jacket holder Scheffler has enjoyed.

The American has dominated 2024 so far, although Scheffler can still improve his putting for further success.
