During Tyrrell Hatton’s winning performance at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship earlier this year, the LIV Golf star managed to equal the course record on the Old Course at St Andrews by shooting 61 to put himself in charge of the tournament.
St Andrews is one of those courses where there can be a huge difference in scoring depending on the weather, with Tyrrell Hatton then shooting 70 during the final round as he just about got across the line.
But he did secure a piece of history with his 61 at St Andrews. However, the Englishman is not the first person to shoot that score around the Old Course in a tournament.
In 2017, Hatton also won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Hatton finished three shots clear of Ross Fisher, with the latter going incredibly close to becoming the first player in DP World Tour history to break 60.
How Ross Fisher wrote his name in St Andrews folklore
Fisher had made 11 birdies through the first 15 holes on Sunday. And he teed off on the last knowing that an eagle would see him shoot 59. Unfortunately, he would have to settle for a 61 and a second place finish that week.
Fisher has had a turbulent career. The 43-year-old looked to have an incredibly bright future ahead after winning four times on the DP World Tour by the end of 2010. He would also make his debut at the Ryder Cup that same year – winning two points from his four matches at Celtic Manor.

He would win again in 2014 – his most recent victory to date – while he has not had a top 30 finish in the majors since 2011. Fisher’s best result in one of the sport’s four biggest events came in 2009 when he finished fifth at the US Open at Bethpage Black – which was won by Lucas Glover.
A dramatic end to his 2024 season
Fisher endured a tense end to the year on the DP World Tour, with the Englishman in the 114th spot on the Race to Dubai, leaving him above the cut line by the barest of margins.
With that, it seems that he is going to get another opportunity to break his own course record next year.
