He is the only player to win a PGA Tour event as an amateur and a professional in the same season

Winning on the PGA Tour as a professional is no mean feat, never mind winning on the PGA Tour as an amateur.

PGA Tour wins did, however, come relatively easy for Scottie Scheffler, who won seven times throughout the 2024 season.

Scheffler won the Hero World Challenge in early December, with the American announced as the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year shortly after.

Peter Finch says Scheffler is playing ‘unbelievable golf’, with the latter managing to successfully defend his Hero World Challenge title in the Bahamas on Sunday.

As always, Tiger Woods hosted the event, with Scheffler joined by star names Justin Thomas and Keegan Bradley among others in the field.

But also taking part was Nick Dunlap, who expressed his delight at being involved before the event got underway.

As quoted by the PGA Tour on X, he said: “To be in the Bahamas when I should be a junior in college is unbelievable and I definitely don’t take it for granted.”

Dunlap went on to finish T14 out of the 20 players involved, continuing a remarkable and indeed record-breaking period for the 20-year-old, who is the first player to win a PGA Tour event as an amateur and a professional in the same season.

Dunlap emerged victorious at The American Express in California in January, becoming the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991.

His Saturday 60 matched the lowest round by an amateur in the history of the tour, with the American carding 70 on Sunday to see off Christiaan Bezuidenhout by one shot.

The 20-year-old also became the youngest PGA Tour member, having clinched success in just his fourth tour event.

A solo lead was secured with his memorable 12-under 60, where he played both nines in 30, with Dunlap dealing with the pressure to triumph over a very strong field.

He was, however, no stranger to golfing records at that moment, with the youngster last year joining Tiger Woods in winning both the U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Amateur.

Turning professional after The American Express, Dunlap then topped the leaderboard of the Barracuda Championship in July, again in California.
