Love him or hate him, there’s no doubt Phil Mickelson has been one of the most entertaining players to watch over the past 30 years.

Mickelson’s remarkable 2013 Open Championship win and history-making performance at Kiawah Island will live long in the memory of almost all golf fans.

The lefty has also come out on the wrong side of history at times during his career. Mickelson vs Stenson at the 2016 Open will go down as some of the best golf ever seen on British shores.

Famously, the 54-year-old also made a double bogey on the 72nd hole at Winged Foot during the 2006 US Open to gift Geoff Ogilvy the title. The US Open still stands between Mickelson and a career grand slam.

It’s not just Mickelson’s golf, which has captured the imagination at times. The lefty has proven to be one of the game’s great characters over the years. In fact, Mickelson has built a reputation for producing quick-witted one-liners whilst out on the course. Here, The Golfing Gazette takes a look at five of the best.

Phil Mickelson: ‘You wanna get this one’

During the 2013 Presidents Cup, Mickelson found himself well out of position at Muirfield Village.

Twenty yards right of the fairway, Mickelson was faced with a hanging lie in the rough. During the build-up to the shot, Mickelson said to the cameraman, “You gonna wanna get this one.”

Amazingly, Mickelson’s approach hit a tree before landing in the hazard before skipping out into the rough before the green.

‘Oh, it is’ – Phil Mickelson’s Tiger Woods one-liner

Playing the 166-yard second hole at the 2018 Northern Trust, Mickelson’s tee shot was immediately greeted by a comment from a fan.

“Gotta be better than Tiger’s,” a fan said as the lefty’s ball flew towards the green.

Mickelson, who was very much aware of where his ball was heading, replied: “Oh, it is.”

His ball would then pitch next to the pin and end up just a few feet from the hole. It was a cool-as-ice moment from the six-time major winner.

As Mickelson and Tiger Woods got set for their 12:55 tee time at the 2002 Tour Championship, Mickelson produced a brilliant comeback after Woods’ list of achievements were read out.

“Ladies and gentlemen, your 12:55 tee time from Windermere, Florida. Winner of 34 PGA Tour events, including the 2002 Masters tournament, The US Open, The Bay Hill Invitational, The Buick Open, The American Express World Golf Championship…,” the announcer said.

Mickelson then produced a timely interruption. “All right, all right, we know,” he said.

Phil Mickelson at 2016 The Memorial: ‘If your head was a touch softer’

Playing the par-five 15th hole at the 2016 Memorial, Mickelson saw his wayward tee shot hit a volunteer on the head.

His ball would cannon towards the other side of the fairway and end up in the rough.

An apologetic Mickelson still found time for humour. “If your head was a touch softer, I’d be in the fairway,” he said.

Phil Mickelson: ‘You can caddie for me anytime’

During the 2017 Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, Mickelson was involved in a hilarious interaction with a young fan.

Whilst playing one of the par-fives, the lefty asked a young fan, “Would you go for it right here, or would you lay up?”

The kid replied: “If I could hit my 3-wood 260, I would probably go for it.”

After taking a hack at the ball with his wood, Mickelson said: “Riley, you can caddie for me anytime.”
