As the season-ending Tour Championship nears, The Golfing Gazette relives an epic moment which happened at East Lake 22 years ago.

The 49-event season concluded at the Atlanta venue, and Tiger Woods was unsurprisingly the man to beat.

Ahead of the Tour Championship, Woods had five wins to his name including the Masters and US Open.

During one of the rounds in Atlanta, Woods was paired with fierce rival Phil Mickelson – and the duo were involved in a memorable moment on East Lake’s first tee box.

As the pair got set for the 12:55 tee time, the announcer began to rattle off all of Woods’ accomplishments from the 2002 season.

“Ladies and gentlemen, your 12:55 tee time from Windermere, Florida. Winner of 34 PGA Tour events, including the 2002 Masters tournament, The US Open, The Bay Hill Invitational, The Buick Open, The American Express World Golf Championship…,” the announcer said.

Mickelson then produced a timely interruption. “All right, all right, we know,” he said.

Tiger Woods’ 2002 PGA Tour record

After winning eight majors before 2002, Woods reached double figures during the PGA Tour season.

Tiger kickstarted his season at the Bay Hill Invitational, where he secured a four-shot victory over Michael Campbell. Mickelson finished one shot further back.

Woods would then head to Augusta and win yet another green jacket after securing a three-shot victory over Retief Goosen.

The 15-time major winner picked up his third victory of 2002 at the US Open, which was held at Bethpage Black. Finally, Woods would round off his season with the Buick Open and a World Golf Championship.
