Jordan Spieth is famous for taking the creative route to the hole.

The three-time major winner rarely makes it easy for himself on the course, as he’s scratched and clawed for miracle shots throughout his career. That’s been his biggest strength and weakness during the immense highs and lows of his captivating golfing journey.

He burst onto the scene as one of the brightest young talents a decade ago, meaning Spieth was compared to Jack Nicklaus, such was the extent of his success. But Spieth’s form has been poor of late, and he hasn’t won since 2022.

Spieth’s creativity extends to clever uses of the rule book. Knowing the rules can be enough to take strokes off your game, and the American once found a clever loophole, as he deliberately hit his ball onto a roof.

How Jordan Spieth found a loophole in the PGA Tour rules

To say Spieth took the scenic route on the 18th hole at the 2024 Valero Texas Open would be the understatement of the century.

On the par five hole, Spieth’s drive went left and landed under a tree limb. He proceeded to hit that limb with his second shot, as his ball fired off next to a drain. This is where Spieth looked to exploit the rules.

Do you think golfers should receive a free drop from divots in the fairway?

He decided to hit the ball onto the roof of the clubhouse in order to receive a free drop and get his hole back on track. The ball rolled down the roof and into the gutter, and because no white stakes marked the building out of bounds, he was awarded a free drop in the field of play.

The damage was already done, and he three-putted for double bogey, but his clever thinking saved him from an even worse score.

The Spieth experience, everybody!

Jordan Spieth’s biggest weakness that forces him into impossible situations

It seems like more than any other player in the game, Spieth finds himself having to dig himself out of impossible scenarios, and always finds himself behind on holes.

That’s because by far his biggest weakness is his accuracy off the tee. Despite his poor results, the only area of Spieth’s game where he didn’t gain strokes in 2025 was his driving accuracy.

Do you think Jordan Spieth will be deserving of invites into the signature events in 2026?

He ranked 124th on the PGA Tour last season in fairways found, hitting the short stuff on only 57.44% of his tee shots.

Until he can consistently find the fairway off the tee, he’ll always find himself in need of some magic in an attempt to find scores.
