Jason Day has enjoyed great success on the PGA Tour throughout the years, but there was actually talk of him joining LIV Golf last year.
LIV Golf burst onto the scene in 2022 and poached some of the PGA Tour‘s best players including Bryson DeChambeau and not long after, Jon Rahm.
However, Jason Day was one of the players who remained on the PGA Tour.
On the surface, Day is actually perfect for the LIV Golf model.
His injury problems in the past mean that a 14-event schedule would be perfectly suited to him and his popularity in the game would be huge for LIV’s brand.
As we head into the off-season now, the Saudi-backed outfit will be making moves to add more PGA Tour players to their ranks.
In fact, two PGA Tour stars are in discussions to join LIV Golf right now. However, Day will not be one of them, judging by his comments from earlier on in the year.
The real reason LIV Golf didn’t offer Jason Day a contract
Considering some of the players LIV have either signed or attempted to sign, the fact that Day is still on the PGA Tour is actually a surprise to some.
However, there is a reason why the Saudi golf league chose not to offer the 2015 PGA Championship winner a contract.
Day was speaking on the Beyond The Clubhouse Podcast back in February, and he opened up on how his agent’s discussions with LIV went down.

“I remember my agent coming to me and saying, ‘Hey, I’m going to have a chat with LIV’ – because obviously he had players over there as well,” Day explained.
“He goes, ‘I’m just going to go and have a chat to them, you don’t have to be involved.’ “I said, ‘I’d prefer not to be involved but it’s always nice to be able to know and see if there’s any like, as a business sense, it’s nice to be able to go and find out like what the potential could be and weigh those potentials.’
“And for me, they gave me a pretty easy out. Like, I was never intending to go across there anyways and that was never my intention. But my agent has to go out and try and find the best deals or potential sponsors, you know, whatever business you can potentially get and that was his job. And obviously, they came back and said, ‘No, he’s injured too much.’“
Jason Day would have seriously considered LIV Golf move
Day admitted to the fact that he would have considered an offer from LIV, if he had actually received one.
He said: “To be honest, I understand it, like if I was in their shoes and I’m like, ‘well this guy, he’s been injured a lot, you know, there’s a lot of money that we’re putting out there and if he’s not playing that would be a bad investment.’
“But looking back on it, if they would’ve given me a number and it would have been a significant number, then you’re going, ‘Oh man, I’m kind of torn’. I’m glad that they were like, no, we’re not going to even throw a number at him because of these injuries. And like I said before, I was very happy on the PGA Tour. Like, I didn’t need the money at all.
“I’m just very, very happy that I stayed because the more and more I thought about once you start chasing money and everything like that. I thought about what golf does for me and how that kind of sits in alignment in my life and how much it gives me purpose.
“Every day I’m up working on my body, working on my game. Everything revolves around me trying to improve myself not only as a person but as a player. I’m not sure if that would have given me that out on LIV.”
Those comments from Day make for really interesting reading.
If Day does manage to address his injury problems, could LIV Golf come back in and make him a new offer in the future?
It certainly wouldn’t be beyond the realms of reality.
