Bryson DeChambeau completely changed the face of golf after he bulked up and overpowered Winged Foot to win the US Open in 2020.

And Shane Lowry gave his opinion at the time on the impact DeChambeau was having on the game of golf as a whole.

The concern at the time was that the American’s prodigious power off the tee could render many of the classic golf courses on the PGA Tour circuit redundant.

DeChambeau is now one of LIV Golf’s biggest stars but it wasn’t too long ago when he was a dominant figure on the PGA Tour.

The two-time major champion cruised to a six-shot victory at the US Open in 2020.

But the way he went about his domination at Winged Foot was the most impressive thing about his victory.

US Open winners usually plot their way around the golf course with caution, but DeChambeau proved to be an exception to that rule five years ago.

However, he did the same in a regular PGA Tour event just two months prior to his US Open success, launching 43 drives 350 yards or more at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Shane Lowry said if he was worried Bryson DeChambeau could ruin golf

Lowry recently praised DeChambeau for his work ethic after witnessing the work he put in at Augusta National back in April.

However, has the Irishman always been a fan of the LIV Golf star?

Lowry spoke about DeChambeau after he romped to victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in July 2020.

The 2019 Open champion was asked whether he was concerned about what the American superstar was capable of doing to some of the famous old traditional golf courses on the circuit, as quoted by the Irish Golfer.

He said: “I’m not really worried for the game because I think you still need to be very skillful, and I think Bryson DeChambeau for the last few years has been a top-5 player in the world anyway. It’s just he’s finding a different way to get the ball from A to B and get the ball in the hole.

“Look, it’ll be interesting to see if anybody else tries to do it. There’s no doubt that over the last 10 years — has equipment got much longer? It’s probably not got a whole lot. I’ve got a little bit longer over the last 10 years, but I wouldn’t put that down to equipment. So I’m not really sure on the whole thing.”

Bryson DeChambeau’s stock yardages with every single club

DeChambeau has actually toned down his speed since 2020.

While he can still reach a 200 mph ball speed, he usually cruises at around 190 mph during tournaments.

Here are his stock carry yardages in 2025:

ClubStock yardage (carry)
Driver343 yards
3-wood300 yards
5-wood290 yards
5-iron246 yards
6-iron231 yards
7-iron220 yards
8-iron202 yards
9-iron185 yards
PW170 yards
46160 yards
GW139 yards
SW121 yards
LW102 yards

Those numbers are quite incredible and it’s even more unbelievable to think that he was even longer five years ago.

DeChambeau may have to rein in his speed even more so moving forward, if he is to control his irons better.

That could be the big difference for him, if he is to win more major championships in the future.
