Winning The Masters is a special achievement at any point in a golfer’s career but to win it and become the first to do so in two categories makes it that extra bit special.
Over the years, we’ve seen some of the best to ever hit a golf ball pick up the green jacket and write their names into history.
Furthermore, we’ve seen multiple time winners like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus and in the modern game, Scottie Scheffler, make it look easy and at times, just another day at the office.
Nevertheless, for some, it means just that bit more and that’s what happened with Mike Weir in 2003 when he wrote his name into the record books for more than one reason.

How Mike Weir became the first left-handed golfer to win The Masters
It seems quite amazing to think that since the tournament’s inception in 1934 that we hadn’t seen a single winner who was left-handed.
That was all going to change though in 2003, when Mike Weir produced the four days of his life at Augusta National to seal his first and only major win.
Weir battled to seven under par for his weekend and went into a playoff with Len Mattiace.
With the 10th hole playing host to the playoff, Mattiace had a nightmare, allowing Weir the opportunity to simply make a bogey and walk away with the green jacket.
Remarkably, Weir not only became the first left-handed golfer to win at Augusta but he also became the first Canadian to win there, a record he still holds to this day.
As for his left-handed record, well, that was more short-lived, as Phil Mickelson rocked up the year after and repeated the feat.

Mike Weir’s PGA Tour career in numbers
Mike Weir has enjoyed a fine career on the PGA Tour and has gone under the radar really in how good he is.
Unlike some stars of the game, Weir has gone about his golf career quietly but at the same time, has enjoyed success.
He was recently the Presidents Cup captain for the internationals, in another nod to just how good his time on the TOUR has been.
In terms of the numbers behind his career, Weir can also be very proud of what he’s achieved.
| Mike Weir’s PGA Tour career | |
| Events played | 467 |
| Cuts made | 270 |
| Wins | 8 |
| Top 10s | 69 |
| Top 5s | 41 |
| Money earned | $28,043,420 |
Clearly, with nearly $30m made in prize money, Mike Weir has done more than well for himself and on top of that, he’ll always have a green jacket and an invite to Augusta to fall back on.
