Why Brandel Chamblee’s claim about Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy was completely wrong

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are unquestionably the best two golfers in the game.

They have been for quite some time now in fairness.

Scheffler has won 20 PGA Tour events since February 2022, including four major championships, and he has been the world number one golfer for 156 consecutive weeks.

Is Rory McIlroy now a better golfer than Scottie Scheffler?

The world number one has not been at his very best this year…

Meanwhile, McIlroy won his sixth major title at Augusta National in April and has 30 PGA Tour wins to his name.

Scheffler and McIlroy both motivate each other to improve as much as they possibly can.

That was certainly the case last year when McIlroy’s Masters win encouraged Scheffler to practice even harder on his game.

The 29-year-old then went on to win seven of his next 14 events.

While Cam Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele and Tommy Fleetwood have all challenged Scheffler and McIlroy at times, the American and the Northern Irishman are streets ahead when it comes to their consistency and winning percentages.

Brandel Chamblee’s Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy claim was wrong

Earlier this week, Chamblee made some eye-catching comments about the abilities of Scheffler and McIlroy.

Well, if Scottie plays well this week, Rory can’t beat him, the former PGA Tour player said.

Scottie is so demonstrably better than everyone else, it’s just not close.

If Scottie plays his best golf, Rory cannot beat him.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but Chamblee is missing the point here.

There’s no doubt that Scheffler has been a better golfer than McIlroy over the past few years.

The American has been far more consistent than the Northern Irishman, and his results back up that notion.

Scheffler has 14 wins and 39 top-10s to his name since the start of the 2024 season, including three majors.

During that timespan, McIlroy has won six times, including two majors, and he has notched up 17 top-10 finishes.

However, while Scheffler is obviously more consistent, McIlroy is almost certainly the more explosive player out of the two.

Rory McIlroy’s ‘A’ game is unmatched

When McIlroy is in full flow, is there anyone on the planet who is actually capable of stopping him?

I would suggest that the answer to that question is, no.

Is Brandel Chamblee right? Is Scottie’s A-game miles better than Rory’s?

If the world numbers one and two played each other 10 times, Scheffler would most likely beat McIlroy seven times.

However, McIlroy’s ‘A’ game is almost certainly better than Scheffler’s. The 37-year-old is definitely more exciting to watch and with his prodigious length, he’s capable of overpowering golf courses.

The Northern Irishman’s issue is that his worst form is a lot worse than Scheffler’s.

It’s such a shame for golf fans that we haven’t yet seen both players at their absolute best going head-to-head at a major championship.

Who knows, perhaps we’ll see it this weekend at Aronimink.

And whenever we do, we will find out who has the better ‘A’ game out of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
