Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are not only the two best players in the world, but they are the most influential figures in the professional golfing landscape as well.
Whenever world number one Scottie Scheffler speaks, people stand up and listen, and the same can be said for Rory McIlroy.
Scheffler and McIlroy both enjoyed stellar PGA Tour seasons in 2025, and Tommy Fleetwood is the only player on the planet who is anywhere near either of them right now.
McIlroy and Scheffler have helped motivate each other with their brilliance over the past year, and they continue to drive one another on by winning.
However, the only thing they really have in common is their exceptional golfing talent.
Who is the better player: Rory McIlroy or Scottie Scheffler?
The two golfers are at very different stages of their careers right now.
There is a feeling that McIlroy has achieved everything he set out to when he began playing as a young child.
Moving forward, he will have to set new goals in order to rediscover the burning desire needed to compete at the very highest level.
However, without Scheffler’s cooperation, one of McIlroy’s dreams for the future may not be possible.
Rory McIlroy needs Scottie Scheffler’s help to make his PGA Tour dream come true
The 36-year-old Masters champion is currently in Melbourne competing in the Australian Open.
Before the tournament began, McIlroy outlined his desire to play more of an international schedule moving forward.
He said: “The landscape of men’s professional golf in particular is a little complicated at the minute,” he said, when asked about being an elder statesman of the game now.
“I have spent some time with Adam [Scott] on the board of the PGA Tour and trying to make that as good as it can be. You have got these other tours, obviously LIV. And I think what LIV has done here in Australia has been amazing. The tournament in Adelaide looks absolutely incredible, especially in a country that has sort of been starved of big time golf events. I think they have done a really, really good job.

“But for me it’s more I didn’t like the fracture in the game and the fact that the only time that all the best players get to go up against each other are in the four major championships.
“I feel like golf needs to be more than that because if all the best players in the world are only getting together four times, golf needs to be relevant more than four times a year, and that is my big concern. I just don’t want it to rip itself apart.
“The majors are always going to be the majors but I think we need big things other than that to get us through the year and be relevant at least once if not twice a month on a global stage.
“Even if you look at this week, we have this tournament here and there is a tournament happening in South Africa and a tournament happening in the Bahamas. I don’t know if that divides eyeballs. I think it would be great if we were all together playing in one big tournament and maybe that could happen sometime down the road.“
It’s not the first time McIlroy has made it very clear that his dream is to play more of a global schedule moving forward.
The Northern Irishman wants all of the best golfers in the world to compete against one another on the global stage more regularly.
However, McIlroy has a huge problem and that is the fact that Scheffler simply doesn’t like traveling to play abroad.
Scottie Scheffler could throw a spanner in the works for Rory McIlroy
The current world number one has never played competitively in Australia, Asia or the Middle East.
Back in July, Scheffler made it very clear that playing the bulk of his golf in the United States is what suits him perfectly.
Do you think Scottie Scheffler should play more outside of the United States?
Some may criticize Scheffler for not playing more around the world.
However, his priority should be doing exactly what he needs to do to enable him to perform to his best level for at least the next decade.
And that is exactly what he is doing.
As things stand, it seems like Scheffler won’t be changing his schedule anytime soon.
Scheffler just seems to be totally content with everything he is doing right now, and that is bad news for McIlroy’s dream of having more tournaments played globally with fully stacked fields.
The bottom line is that if the world’s best golfer continues to play the majority of his golf in the United States, it will be very difficult to get any kind of Global Tour off the ground.
