It is difficult to argue that Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup captaincy offered any sort of blueprint for his successor ahead of Adare Manor in 2027.

The final day fightback at Bethpage Black almost led to the greatest turnaround in sporting history. However, it also led to a scoreline which completely flattered Team USA.

Team USA would be making a big mistake taking too many positives from what happened in New York. Ultimately, they are still looking for their first victory on the road since 1993.

But perhaps there may be one gift Keegan Bradley has left the team with – judging by comments from Jordan Spieth this week.

The gift Keegan Bradley may have given his successor as Ryder Cup captain

Spieth had a reasonable year considering that he spent much of 2024 playing with a wrist injury. He finished fourth on two occasions on the PGA Tour this past season.

Jordan Spieth fitness update ahead of the 2026 PGA Tour season

“I’m very healthy. Last offseason, I was in a cast after surgery, and this offseason, I really didn’t take much time off after the season ended.

“I wasn’t able to get things right where I wanted them to be, and now I’ve got five months to get them set in stone, so I don’t have to do this back-and-forth.

“I’m healthy; I’m stronger than I’ve been in a long time, and we’ve had good weather in town, so I’ve been able to get a lot of work in.”

However, he did not make it past the first FedEx Cup playoff event. Nevertheless, Bradley may have been tempted to include him in his team for Bethpage given his past experience.

In truth, a number of Bradley’s captain’s picks could have few complaints if they were left out. Collin Morikawa was in dreadful form, while Justin Thomas was not exactly playing much better.

So it was not entirely out of the realms of possibility that Spieth would be considered as something of a wildcard for the American team.

Missing out, however, has seemingly had a profound impact on the Texan.

Spieth noted this week that not playing at the Ryder Cup lit a fire in him heading into 2026.

“Missing that one lit a fire in me. I hit a lot of balls those few days when the tournament was going on, as I do when golf is being played and I’m not there. It was good. Maybe I needed it, a little humbling, and I got back to work,” he said.

A much-needed turning point in Jordan Spieth’s career

Admittedly, Spieth has given fans little reason to believe that he can get back to being the same player who looked destined to break all sorts of records when he burst onto the scene.

The 32-year-old has not won on the PGA Tour since 2022.

Do you think Jordan Spieth will be deserving of invites into the signature events in 2026?

But for someone of Spieth’s talent, not representing Team USA since the Ryder Cup in Rome has got to be extremely disappointing.

He is now at an age where there are no guarantees that he will improve further. He is also surrounded by so many potential superstars.

If missing out on the Ryder Cup this time around inspires Spieth, it could be a game changer for Team USA for when they get to Ireland.

It is hard to imagine that he can get anywhere near Scottie Scheffler‘s level, but there is little reason why Spieth cannot get back to a standard where he is contending in majors.

And his Ryder Cup snub could prove to be the turning point.
