Xander Schauffele has shared what he’s really been struggling with during the opening two days of the US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

The 2024 PGA Championship winner is one under, four shots back of leader Ludvig Aberg, with 36 holes to play.

Despite not being at his best, the 30-year-old will still be delighted to be in contention at a venue that has proven a stern test.

After grinding his way to one under, the American has opened up on what he’s been struggling with during the first two rounds.

Speaking after his second round, Schauffele admitted it was the worst he’s ever felt with the driver in hand.

He explained: “Yesterday was the worst I have probably ever felt over the driver. It’s funny how that goes.”

After hitting just 15 fairways through the first 36 holes, the 30-year-old claimed it was a “humbling” experience on Friday.

Schauffele added: “I hit some better drives today but still struggled; I mean, I hit the freaking tree off the sixth tee box; I hit it about 100 yards there. So, it has been a bit humbling on that front.”

Schauffele has genuinely lived up to his status as one of the world’s best golfers during the first two days at Pinehurst.

With his driver entirely off the boil, the American has managed to maintain pace with the leaders despite not being at his brilliant best.

And that’s precisely what the great players do; they find a way to contend no matter what.

Schauffele has relied upon his putter to bail him out of trouble this week, and if he can find more fairways during the third round, he stands a real chance of teeing off with the leaders for the final 18 holes.
