Xander Schauffele has predicted what Rory McIlroy is now saying to his team behind the scenes after withdrawing from the Travelers Championship.

The world number two quickly withdrew from the PGA Tour signature event after missing out on the US Open at Pinehurst No.2 on Sunday.

McIlroy’s next outing is set to come in the Scottish Open ahead of the final major of the year at Royal Troon in the middle of July.

Schauffele, who finished second behind McIlroy at the Wells Fargo before his PGA Championship victory, has claimed the Northern Irishman will be discussing what exactly went wrong in North Carolina.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Travelers Championship this week, Schauffele said: “As a competitor, all of us have had our highs and lows to a certain degree. It’s a tough spot, for sure.

“I am sure he and his team are discussing what happened, and sometimes, you just need to step away from it all and be as objective as possible.”

Schauffele went on to suggest the four-time major champion is right to take time out.

He added: “You’re in the moment there, and obviously, it didn’t go his way. He just needs some time away to figure out what’s going on.”

Travelers Championship appearance would’ve been bad call from Rory McIlroy

Whether the media like it or not, McIlroy needs to take some time away from the spotlight.

There’s no doubt the recent US Open heartache will be hurting more than any of his previous near-misses in the majors.

The Northern Irishman had the tournament in the palm of his hand, and throwing it away in the manner he did would be demoralising.

Avoiding the Travelers this week feels like the right move. McIlroy’s attention must now be firmly fixed on The Open at Royal Troon, with preparation set to begin at the Scottish Open the week prior.

Witnessing the Northern Irishman bounce back in the last major of the year would undoubtedly be a spectacle large swathes of the golfing world would love to witness.
