It wasn’t to be for Xander Schauffele in Paris as he failed to defend his Olympic title.
Schauffele, who has won two majors this season with some stunning golf, endured a final round nightmare really as he shot two-over to drop way down the field.
The American was in contention all week but with others producing on Sunday and Schauffele faltering, he was only ever going one way.
Of course, having already won a gold previously, Schauffele won’t be too disappointed and he saw good pal Scottie Scheffler bring home the gold anyway.
Scheffler was masterful around the tricky Le Golf National on Sunday.
The course itself, and the Olympic experience in general, was a talking point all week.
Rory McIlroy admitted he loved being in Paris, while Tom Kim was among those to comment on how impressive the course itself was playing.
And following that theme, Schauffele gave his flowers to the course as well.

Xander Schauffele’s honest verdict on Le Golf National after missing out on Olympic medal
Schauffele was speaking to the media after his final round and while disappointed, he had plenty of praise for the actual course in Paris.
“More disappointed. Not too surprised. You know, the course yielded two 62s, the last two rounds and if you go through their round, it would probably be surprising from my end just to be 15 shots behind those guys,” Schauffele said.
“But it’s a good course. It’s a good tournament course. I was a great example of what it looks like if you try to press from being out of position and taking on some risks. You can make a mess of what is or what has looked like an easy course to some guys.
“So for that, I mean, kudos to the course and whoever designed it and the Crew here because it’s set up nice and fair and two 62s are incredible scores but sitting here 2-over looking like a 15-handicap.”
Schauffele is obviously disappointed in his own game but at the end of the day, it comes down to execution.
Scottie Scheffler spoke of how important two shots were for him on Sunday, and sometimes, a couple of shots can make or break a round.
Xander Schauffele will come again, no doubt. And even if he didn’t, he’s still had a truly amazing 2024.
