2024 PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele has admitted one part of Muirfield Village Golf Club has really shocked him ahead of the Memorial Tournament.
The signature event is the first time Schauffele has appeared since his fine win at Valhalla, and the American is part of a stacked field that has descended on Dublin.
Jack Nicklaus’ event is the last PGA Tour stop before the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2, which gets underway on June 13.
Muirfield has typically provided a stern test over the years – and this week promises to be no different.

U.S. Open conditions should be expected, with sloped greens and thick rough set to test the best players in the world.
Schauffele has been talking about Muirfield’s current condition – and the American couldn’t believe what he had noticed about the rough.
The 2024 PGA Championship victor said: “Muirfield Village) is in great shape. It’s really hard. The rough is like the most dense I’ve ever seen.”
The Memorial kicks off two weeks of pulsating action
With Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, and a host of the world’s best players joining Schauffele at Muirfield, the 2024 Memorial Tournament promises to be another pulsating week.
Furthermore, with several of the names above performing at near their best, a stacked leaderboard could emerge come Sunday afternoon.
It feels like, right now, the golfing world is being treated on the PGA Tour. It’s hard to remember a time when so many quality players were in form and regularly going toe-for-toe.
And the best part is that the Memorial is only a dress rehearsal for the year’s toughest major in North Carolina next week.
Whoever succeeds in Dublin will no doubt be among the favourites at Pinehurst No.2.
