Predictions
The Golfing Gazette writers predict who they think will walk away with the Memorial Tournament grand prize and The Claret Jug…
Lee Connor: “I’m going for an outsider and I’m picking Jordan Spieth to come from nowhere and win it. He is in pretty abysmal form but has only missed the cut three times in 14 this season and has 3 top tens as well. He’s proven in the past he can win the big tournaments so he’s my curve ball pick to come from out of the blue and upset the odds.”
Sam Stone: “Viktor Hovland looked somewhere near his best at the PGA Championship after what has been a torrid start to 2024. Swing alterations caused more harm than good, but after reuniting with his old coach, his Valhalla performance provides reason to be optimistic. When at his best, the Norwegian is more than capable of challenging the likes of Scottie Scheffler, and, if on form at Muirfield Village, he has a good chance of landing back-to-back Memorial titles this weekend.”
Peter Lynch: “Reigning champions can never be dismissed at competitions such as the Memorial Tournament, and Viktor Hovland should be no different this time around. The Norwegian endured a tricky start to 2024, including a missed cut at Augusta National, but has since found his feet, finishing solo third at Valhalla, with that momentum certain to help him out at Muirfield Village.”
Jordan Harris: “Collin Morikawa has had five top 10s without winning this year, and he has a point to prove after failing to launch a real challenge on Sunday at the PGA Championship. He has previously missed out on this title after a play-off with Patrick Cantlay back in 2021, so perhaps this is the year he puts that right.”
