Ludvig Aberg will be attempting to chase down Robert McIntyre over the week at the Valero Texas Open.

MacIntyre holds a four-shot lead over Aberg with 36 holes still to play at the Valero Texas Open.

The European Ryder Cup teammates played alongside each other during the first two rounds at TPC San Antonio and they will be paired together once again on Saturday.

What would be the most blockbuster final pairing at The Masters?

Scottie and Spieth or Rory and Bryson?

The Scot leads on 14-under-par after firing rounds of 66 and 64, while Aberg has posted back-to-back 67s.

Aberg is very highly regarded amongst his fellow PGA Tour players, but it’s fair to say that he needs to start winning more consistently now.

Given his all round game, two PGA Tour wins doesn’t seem enough for the 26-year-old.

He has a great chance to get another victory this weekend, but he may face the same issue he did at The Players Championship three weeks ago.

Aberg seemed to be in pole position to win The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass last month.

That was until he reached the 11th hole, when he was stopped in his tracks following a double bogey.

He went from bad to worse after that as Cam Young won the trophy in the end.

After Aberg’s collapse at The Players, Johnson Wagner suggested that his final round pairing with his good friend Michael Thorbjornsen was the reason for his demise, when speaking on the Golf on CBS show.

“In the case of Ludvig Aberg, I think the pairing with Michael Thorbjornsen was a little bit too comfortable, Wagner said.

“I didn’t think Michael was gonna be able to hang in there, he just hadn’t been in that situation enough.

“They’re also really close friends.

“So, you almost needed someone that you didn’t want to be all buddy buddy with.

“That would get you in your zone, and literally I think it was unfortunate, just, uh, too much comfort, and in a situation where you’re gonna have a lot of stress, you need to be able to embrace that.”

Ludvig Aberg needs to find more intense focus

That is actually a really good point from Wagner.

And the same may be true for Aberg this week in San Antonio, with MacIntyre alongside him.

Who will win the Valero Texas Open this week? ⛳

Plenty of big names to choose from… 🏌️

The big Swede is obviously an extremely laid back character, and he is seemingly always in a fairly good mood out on the golf course.

However, perhaps he needs to start zoning in more during the final 18 holes of tournaments, if he is to win the biggest events.

A big test of Aberg’s mentality will be if he is paired with MacIntyre on Sunday at the Valero Texas Open.

Then we will see if he has indeed learnt from his failings at The Players.
