Dan Rapaport has shared what he has heard from some at Riviera amid recent claims that the iconic venue could host a PGA Tour event during the final stages of the season in a revamped schedule.

There is plenty of intrigue surrounding how the new PGA Tour schedule is going to look from 2027 onwards. There is an expectation that Brian Rolapp will oversee a drastic transformation as he looks to maximise the tour’s potential.

Speaking last year, Harris English hinted that the PGA Tour schedule could last just 20 events. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods recently spoke of the importance of having the strongest tour possible.

“We’ve heard all this talk, some people saying, ‘oh, it’s a done deal that Riviera and Pebble Beach are going to be played in August’. That is just not true,” he said.

“I was at Riviera asking people just last week and they were like, ‘we don’t have a tournament in August. We don’t feel like our golf course is the way we want it and it’s not the time of year that we like’. So there’s definitely a lot of negotiations going on.”

The problem the PGA Tour may initially face as they look to transform the schedule

If the PGA Tour does cut the schedule down to fewer than 25 events, you would like to think that almost every course on the calendar will be notable.

The calls for the WM Phoenix Open to kick off the new season increased after another brilliant week at TPC Scottsdale earlier this month.

Much may come down to what the sponsors and the television companies want, particularly in the next few years with contracts already in place.

Ultimately, there should simply be a desire to play the likes of Riviera, Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass, Harbour Town, and Muirfield Village when they are at their very best.
