Shane Lowry won The Open Championship the last time it was held at Royal Portrush in 2019.

Lowry achieved a lifetime ambition of winning The Open six years ago, and to make it even sweeter, it was in a year when it was held on the island of Ireland.

Royal Portrush is a golf course that suits Lowry’s game perfectly, so it should surprise nobody if he contends again this week.

The 38-year-old hasn’t won another major since his victory in Northern Ireland in 2019, and he will be desperate to get his hands on the Claret Jug once again this week, after skipping The Scottish Open last week.

It has been tough going for the Irishman over the past couple of months.

Lowry endured a really tough week at the US Open in June, and he looked like he had reached the end of his tether with the game in general at Oakmont.

A return to Royal Portrush might just be exactly what he needs in order to breathe fire back into his 2025 season.

What Shane Lowry has been doing in preparation for The Open

Lowry decided not to play at The Renaissance Club last week.

It was somewhat of an unusual decision, with only four other players aside from the Irishman inside the top 25 in the world skipping the event.

Now it has been revealed what Lowry actually did during his three-week break from competitive golf.

Sky Sports golf analyst George Harper was speaking during ‘Live at the 153rd Open: At The Range’, and lifted the lid on what Lowry has been doing during the build-up to this year’s Open at Royal Portrush.

It’s great to see him back. I was talking to him yesterday on the range. He has had an amazing preparation. He has been playing all over Ireland and Northern Ireland. Links courses every other day and he is licking his lips, there’s no doubt about it.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if those two [Lowry and Fleetwood] were going head to head on Saturday and Sunday. Shane has clearly been in good form but hasn’t delivered on the big stage thus far this season so he has had his eye on this one.

He has put in so many hours. He has visited Portrush a couple of times prior to this week. He is not going to lose this on lack of preparation. He is as ready as he’ll ever be for an Open Championship.

Lowry’s decision to skip the Scottish Open could end up being a masterstroke, as he should head into The Open Championship feeling refreshed after taking a break from competition.

Shane Lowry’s 2025 PGA Tour results

Lowry has enjoyed some very good weeks this season, but he hasn’t yet managed to get over the line with a win.

Here is how his results look from the 2025 season so far:

2025 resultsLowry’s totals
Events played16
Wins0
Top-5s2
Top-10s4
Top-25s10
Missed cuts3

Four top-10s and two top-5s from 16 events played is not a bad return at all.

However, Lowry was bitterly disappointed with his failure to win The Truist Championship back in May.

He still has plenty of time left this season to secure his first win of 2025.

A win at The Open this week would turn a decent year into a sensational one for Lowry, and we all know that he’s more than capable of getting the job done at Royal Portrush.
