World number one Scottie Scheffler is back in action at the Charles Schwab Challenge this week – and things didn’t quite go to plan during round one.

Scheffler carded a rare two-over-par 72 at Colonial and is seven shots back of leader Charley Hoffman.

Staring on the 10th, Scheffler found himself in trouble on the par-three 13th, where he registered a triple bogey six.

The 2024 Masters champion managed to recover somewhat, picking up one shot on his final 14 holes. Nevertheless, Scheffler endured a frustrating start in Fort Worth.

After making a birdie of the par-four 17th, Scheffler positioned himself well on the 18th. However, with a sand wedge in hand, the American’s lofted shot stopped dead on the green, failing to release anywhere near the hole.

It was a moment Scheffler couldn’t comprehend with his caddie, Ted Scott.

“You can’t make that up, Teddy,” said Scheffler. “That ball didn’t even bounce.”

It’s been a remarkable couple of weeks for Scheffler after his arrest ahead of the second day of the PGA Championship.

Now that the dust has somewhat settled, it could take a couple of rounds for him to get fully back up to speed.

Hitting the course at his home town event is probably the ideal scenario. He can almost escape from all the media attention and focus on what he’s good at.

An over-par round is a rarity for the world number one, and it would be a shock if it lasted. In fact, Scheffler shooting a low score on Friday wouldn’t be a surprise. He’s only seven shots back and more than capable of making a run for the Charles Schwab, a title he’s never won previously.
