What Scottie Scheffler can achieve by winning The CJ Cup Byron Nelson that hasn’t been done since Tom Watson in 1980

Scottie Scheffler is on course to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this weekend and in doing so he can become the first man since the legendary Tom Watson to complete a big achievement at the event.

Scheffler is a record breaker in his own right and while he’s not got the win he’s craved so far in 2025, he is firmly on course to win in Texas.

The world number one is eight shots clear of the field going into round four and barring the mother of all collapses, will get his 2025 season off and running ahead of the PGA Championship in a few weeks’ time.

Scheffler will miss the Truist next week to prepare for the PGA and if he can maintain the form he’s shown at TPC Craig Ranch, he’ll be a strong contender to win.

And if he does see it out, Scheffler will put himself into the Byron Nelson record books with a feat not seen since Tom Watson in the 80s.

Scottie Scheffler ready to match Tom Watson’s Byron Nelson achievement

In realistic terms, Scottie Scheffler is not blowing an eight shot lead and with the field behind him not being the very best in the world, any collapse would be mind-blowing.

Therefore, he’s on course to be the first ‘wire to wire’ winner of the event since Tom Watson in 1980, with only one other man, Mark Hayes in 1976, doing it in history.

Furthermore, Scheffler will also become the first player on the PGA Tour since Lee Hodges in 2023 to be leading from round one all the way to the end of round four.

Can Scottie Scheffler kickstart his major hunt for 2025?

Scheffler is going to win this weekend but the real question is can he get himself in the best form possible to have a run at the majors and add to his collection.

Right now, just the two major wins for a player as good as Scheffler doesn’t sit right and many expect him to strike while the iron is hot in terms of winning while he’s world number one.

With the PGA to come and the US Open to follow, Scheffler looks like he has found his game.

In an ideal world, we see Rory McIlroy and Scheffler battle it out at one of the majors and that’s what most of the golf world would love to see.

Right now, on the form they’re both showing, there’s a chance it does happen.
