The PGA Tour appears to have made a decision on whether The Sentry will be held in 2026 after already confirming that the tournament will not be returning to Kapalua in January.
There has been some doubt over The Sentry for some time. Droughts in Maui have left the golf course unplayable. Michael Kim was among those to express his disappointment about the news.
There were discussions about The Sentry moving to another venue. The tournament has traditionally been the curtain-raiser for the season, and is now a signature event. So it would be a significant step to move it elsewhere.
The PGA Tour have also had to factor in that the Sony Open takes place in Hawaii the following week. It would clearly have a negative impact on the field in Honolulu if The Sentry moved away from the Aloha State.
The PGA Tour have reportedly made a decision on The Sentry
And it seems that the PGA Tour have now made a decision on the fate of the event in 2026. Speaking on the Golf Channel Podcast, Rex Hoggard suggested that there is a growing feeling that the tournament will be postponed.

“I’m hearing from multiple sources that The Sentry probably isn’t going to be played next year,” he said.
“Officials are starting to tell players, plan on starting your year, if you want to, at the Sony Open, which means they either couldn’t find a home, or didn’t have a lot of motivation to find a home for The Sentry. Of course, that golf course has endured drought and simply wasn’t playable.”
How the top 10 looked as Hideki Matsuyama broke a PGA Tour record at The Sentry earlier this year
Kapalua saw PGA Tour history made earlier this year. Hideki Matsuyama won The Sentry with a score of 35 under par. It was the lowest score in the tour’s history.
Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa did put some distance between themselves and the chasing pack. Rory McIlroy admitted he would not have kept up if he had been in the field. However, it must be noted that those on 22 under par finished just outside the top 10.
| Position | Player | Score |
| 1 | Hideki Matsuyama | -35 |
| 2 | Collin Morikawa | -32 |
| 3 | Sungjae Im | -29 |
| 4 | Jhonattan Vegas | -25 |
| T5 | Thomas Detry | -24 |
| T5 | Ludvig Aberg | -24 |
| T5 | Corey Conners | -24 |
| T8 | Tom Hoge | -23 |
| T8 | Harry Hall | -23 |
| T8 | Cameron Young | -23 |
| T8 | Sam Burns | -23 |
| T8 | Maverick McNealy | -23 |
Fans were not impressed with the birdie-fest The Sentry became.
Nevertheless, it is a real shame that Kapalua will not be the first stop on the PGA Tour calendar in 2026. And there will be plenty of disappointment among spectators if the tournament is indeed postponed rather than relocated for one year.
