The 2025 PGA Tour season concluded at the Tour Championship four weeks ago, as Tommy Fleetwood finally won his first event in the United States.

The FedExCup Fall then kicked off with last week’s Procore Championship, which the United States players used as preparation for the Ryder Cup.

Six more FedExCup Fall events will be played before the end of the calendar year and the start of the new PGA Tour season in January.

Golf journalist Rex Hoggard has now revealed what he has heard about the Tour’s plans for the 2026 season after a recent announcement.

Rex Hoggard reveals PGA Tour plans for The Sentry

The PGA Tour recently confirmed that The Sentry would not be played on The Plantation Course at Kapalua in January.

The Hawaiian island of Maui has experienced “significant drought conditions in recent weeks”, so the decision was made to look elsewhere.

However, Hoggard has claimed that the PGA Tour may not find another venue for The Sentry, instead canceling the event altogether.

“There are plenty of other options for the Tour to play The Sentry, essentially the season-opening event,” he said.

“The idea being that you could either do it in Hawaii, where there are plenty of other golf courses not in Maui that do not have to worry about these restrictions, or even in California.

“One of the options I heard a source bring up was La Costa. It hosted the season-opening event until it moved to Maui in 1999.

“However, I have had three sources tell me that of all the options the PGA Tour is considering right now, one of them is not playing the event at all.

“That is not unprecedented. You go back just a couple of years ago, during the pandemic, and there were events that were cancelled.

“I think the Tour is exhausting all options, but right now they are looking really hard at the idea that it could not be played.”

Justin Thomas’ opinion on The Sentry golf course in Kapalua

The Sentry has had many different names throughout its history, but the tournament has been held at the Kapalua Resort since 1999.

Kapalua has become a popular venue among PGA Tour players, with Michael Kim sharing his disappointment at the recent news.

Justin Thomas is another player who has enjoyed travelling to Hawaii to play in The Sentry. “There’s no place like Kapalua,” he said earlier this year.

“The course was in amazing condition and enjoyable as always. It was a shame we didn’t get much wind besides Thursday to have the course play to its true self!”
