Max Homa has been in the golfing wilderness for a while now, and Collin Morikawa has struggled with his game as well, albeit not to the extent that his Ryder Cup teammate has.

Homa is winless on the PGA Tour since the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open whilst Morikawa hasn’t tasted victory since the Zozo Championship in 2023.

However, Morikawa has at least been contending, whilst Homa failed to get through to the weekend at an event with a cut since The Open Championship in 2024, until The Masters two weeks ago.

Homa split with his caddie Joe Greiner earlier this month, and interestingly, Morikawa has just gone through exactly the same scenario.

It’s no coincidence that both golfers have struggled to emulate their previous success over the past 12-18 months.

However, as the saying goes, form is temporary, but class is permanent.

What Max Homa said he finds ‘amazing’ about Collin Morikawa

Morikawa is well known for being the best iron player on tour.

The 28-year-old has forged an incredible career for himself already through his exceptional ability with an iron in his hand.

And Homa once explained how he is a huge fan of Morikawa’s solid iron play:

“As far as impact goes, and the face stabilisation, someone like Collin Morikawa does an amazing job of kind of staying in the golf shot and turning his hips out of the way and keeping his club face really, really stable. It’s really not a surprise when you see the stats every year how good of an iron player he is. When you watch it in slow motion you think, ‘how could he ever screw that up’?”

The six-time PGA Tour winner has one of the most stable club faces in the game when he swings the club.

That means that there is little club face rotation because he uses his body to turn back and through the shot, and is subsequently less reliant on his hands.

Collin Morikawa’s poor form explained with three key stats

Whilst Morikawa’s form hasn’t fallen off the edge of a cliff per se, he has been nowhere near his best.

Considering how good he was from 2021 to 2023, his performances in 2024 simply weren’t good enough, and he would admit that himself.

His drop-off in form can be explained by his performances in three key categories:

PGA Tour seasonStrokes gained approach to the greenPromiximity to the holeGreens in regulation

202442nd113th143rd
20232nd5th7th
20223rd3rd30th
20211st7th5th

The good news for Morikawa is that he has clearly improved massively this season from last year, and is producing similar numbers to what he did during his first four or five years on tour.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the 28-year-old American will win again very soon indeed.

Homa should look at the way that Morikawa has bounced back from the doldrums and use it as inspiration.
