Jordan Spieth is in action at Colonial Golf Course this week but Ryan Palmer has explained why Spieth won’t be able to replicate one legendary shot from 2016.
Palmer is a member at Colonial and has been heavily involved with making some changes to the course ahead of tee off this week.
The 47-year-old is good friends with a few top names on the PGA Tour and is close with Spieth, who is also well accustomed to what Colonial will offer up ahead of this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge.
Spieth has had success at the course in the past as well, having won once in 2016 and finished second on another three occasions.
Speaking of that 2016 win, Spieth topped off his week by holing a near impossible chip shot on 17 after hitting his shot into one of the stands before getting a drop and relief.
However, explaining that shot, Ryan Palmer has shared why this time around, Spieth won’t be so lucky if he goes for that same shot.

Jordan Spieth did something at Colonial in 2016 that he won’t be able to do at the Charles Schwab Challenge
Speaking on the Smylie Kauffman podcast, The Smylie Show, Palmer explained what he thinks is one of his funniest stories involving Spieth on the golf course.
“But I will say that the stands are no longer there. That saved him when he won Colonial a few years back. I’d finished third, but he had it left in the rough on 17 and hits this ball that would have been on the 14th fairway,” Palmer said.
“It was so hot and hits the stands, stops, gets his drop and guess what Jordan does? What does Jordan do? Chips in.
“That’s it, unbelievable. It was one of those deals. That’s why when you see it, you see me watching him and just kind of laughing like…shocker.”
Spieth will want to him on home soil

A lot of players seem to step it up when it’s on courses they either know or if they know the crowd are going to get behind them.
We saw over on LIV Golf recently how the Australian crowd roared The Rippers to a huge win and it made for an interesting spectacle in terms of watchability.
Spieth, then, will be hoping to find some form and produce in front of the Texas crowd.
So far in 2024, Spieth hasn’t quite hit top gear but there were a few signs of life at The PGA Championship last weekend before he eventually dwindled down to finish 43rd.
A win in his hometown, though, could really ignite his season.
