Max Homa was a surprise pick for the USA’s Presidents Cup team, and Jim Furyk has explained why the 33-year-old will present in Montreal.

Homa’s inclusion was criticised after the American endured a brutal end to the PGA Tour season. Homa finished 70th at the St Jude Championship before missing out on the Tour Championship at the BMW.

Homa has reacted to his Presidents Cup pick and admitted he was perhaps fortunate to be gifted a spot in the 12-man renewal.

Furyk has now spoken about his reasoning and explained what happened between him and Homa during the American’s torrid time at the St Jude in Memphis.

Speaking during the Presidents Cup media scrum earlier this week, Furyk revealed that he had talked to Homa about his struggles.

“I sat down with Max even back in Memphis, talked a lot about his game, what he wasn’t happy with in his game, what he was doing the work on,” Furyk explained.

“Started to kind of turn the corner a little bit at BMW, but unfortunately, we knew he was going to run out of tournaments, so it put he and Brian Harman in a very difficult place, not being in Atlanta, not having more golf to play, and kind of being on the bubble.”

Homa’s second half of the season has been largely disappointing. The American has finished over par and out of contention on several occasions.

Furyk, however, is looking to draw on Homa’s previous Presidents Cup experience. “I look at Max’s attributes and look at how he’s played the last two years,” the 54-year-old explained.

“Undefeated record in Charlotte, our best record last year in Rome, and I think then you go to a lot of the intangibles, as well, as far as — I guess when I say an emotional leader, I also look at kind of the glue, a guy that pulls the team room together.”

Of course, golf’s team events require more than individual talent. Nevertheless, all eyes will be on Homa’s performance and whether Furyk’s pick will be justified.
