Xander Schauffele is the only player who can stop Scottie Scheffler going into The Tour Championship with a two shot lead as the FedEx Cup play-offs take the world’s best to Castle Pines for the BMW Championship.

Xander Schauffele is second in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the BMW Championship after finishing in a tie for second at the St Jude Championship last week.

Of course, it is Schauffele who has the much better track record at The Tour Championship, having won back in 2017 while also finishing as a runner-up on three occasions. So if he begins at East Lake within two shots of the lead, then the 30-year-old will be in a phenomenal position to claim the FedEx Cup title.

Certainly, some are already backing Schauffele to beat Scheffler at The Tour Championship due to his track record. But there are much greater question marks over how he will fare at the BMW Championship with the PGA Tour returning to Castle Pines for the first time since 2006.

How Xander Schauffele is looking in practice before BMW Championship

The altitude will be a major factor in the coming days, with Justin Thomas suggesting that one of the biggest challenges will be deciding yardages in the Colorado skies. Schauffele himself, has spoken about some of the weird shots players will face this week.

But it appears that he is looking to be in good form, with Smylie Kaufman telling The Smylie Show that he has heard positive things about the world number two’s practice rounds.

“From what I’ve heard, I didn’t get to watch Xander play much last week, everything I’ve heard this week is that he looks really good and sharp. It seems like a really good golf course for Xander, just when I think about how it lays out,” he said.

What is overlooked about Open champion’s form

Obviously, the high points of Schauffele’s season came with his major wins at the PGA Championship and The Open. But there is one aspect of the Olympian’s season which has arguably been completely overlooked.

Schauffele finished just outside the top 50 back at Pebble Beach, but that is the only time that he has finished outside the top 25 all year. In fact, he has 14 top 10s along the way.

He has always been known for his consistency, but he has barely put a foot wrong all year. So it would be no surprise if he was able to produce a brilliant performance around Castle Pines this week – ensuring that he returns to East Lake with even more momentum ahead of the season’s finale.
