Among those who chose to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, few have improved their reputation as much as Bryson DeChambeau.

Since DeChambeau’s LIV Golf debut in Portland, the 31-year-old has become an internet sensation and added another major championship to his record book. From a once divisive figure, DeChambeau is now one of golf’s most popular names.

DeChambeau’s first PGA Tour win in 2017 alerted the golfing world to his immense talent, but a culmination of incidents made him hard to root for. Whether it was his claim that Augusta National should be a par 67, DeChambeau saying his Cobra driver “sucks” at the 2021 Open, his feud with Brooks Koepka or the American’s painfully slow play – there were plenty of issues.

DeChambeau’s move to LIV also drew criticism, with the breakaway golf league backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

DeChambeau’s move to the PIF-backed venture came as a shock, especially when considering what he said just weeks before he quit the PGA Tour.

During his last ever press conference on the PGA Tour – the 2022 Memorial Tournament – DeChambeau claimed moving to the breakaway league wouldn’t be a “risk” he was willing to take.

“There’s not really any conversations that need to be made about that, other than the fact that, like, every person out here has their own opinion on it,” DeChambeau said in 2022.

“Me, there’s obviously a lot of conversation. For me, I personally don’t think that at this point in time I’m in a place in my career where I can risk things like that. I’m loyal to my family that I’ve created around me with sponsors and everything. And as of right now, the golf world is probably going to change in some capacity.”

He added: “I don’t know what that is. Not my job to do so. I’m just going to keep playing professional golf and enjoy it wherever it takes me, play with the best players in the world. That’s really all I’ve got, that’s what I’ll do for the rest of my life, because I want to be one of the best players in the world.”

After finishing nine over, making nine bogeys and two double bogeys over 36 holes, DeChambeau’s weekend was cut short. Billy Horschel would go on to win Jack Nicklaus’ event.

DeChambeau went on to finish T56 at the US Open before making his LIV Golf debut. The American played The 150th Open in July, where he would tie for eighth.
