Tyrrell Hatton has arguably gone under the radar for having quite an outstanding year following his move to LIV Golf ahead of the 2024 season.
Tyrrell Hatton was certainly not the marquee signing for LIV Golf, with the Englishman following Jon Rahm to the league. But it was still a big blow for the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour when he decided to make the jump.
Rahm won the individual title on LIV, but Hatton also enjoyed a superb season. He became the first Legion XIII player to win a tournament, after triumphing in Nashville. Meanwhile, Hatton made history as he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship for a third time.
Hatton has put himself in a brilliant position to make the Ryder Cup team in 2025. But the 33-year-old is clear in the next step that he needs to take in his career.
Tyrrell Hatton suggests a disappointment from his career
Quite remarkably, Hatton has quite a underwhelming record in the majors given how much talent he possesses. And ahead of the PIF Saudi International, Hatton explained that he feels that he now needs to get himself in contention in the sport’s four biggest events much more often.
“I would like to think that everyone’s competitive enough that you’re not just going into the tournament hoping you can top 10. Obviously when you tee it up, you’re there trying to win the tournament. Whether that’s a major championship, playing on LIV, playing a DP World Tour event, the mindset of why you’re there doesn’t really change,” he said.

“In terms of am I where I want to be in my career at the moment, I’m only 33, so although this is the end of my 11th year playing at the top level of professional golf — it sounds crazy to say that it’s already been 11 years, but I would have liked to have probably done better in majors. I certainly would have liked to have contended in at least one of them. I think my best finish is probably 4th or 5th in a major. From my point of view, that’s not really anything to get overly excited about.
“Maybe next year will be the year that I actually give myself a chance, but ultimately I try my best every week. Some weeks work out better than others.”
How Hatton has fared in the majors
Hatton has one top five finish in his entire major career, and that came back in 2016. What is disappointing is that Hatton had two good years in 2018 and 2019, but then went on to miss all three cuts in 2020.
Meanwhile, he has one top 10 – a ninth place finish at the Masters this year – in the last four years.
| Masters | PGA Championship | US Open | The Open Championship | |
| Top 10s | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| Best finish | T9th | T10th | T6th | T5th |
| Missed cuts | 2 | 2 | 3 | 7 |
| 2024 result | T9th | T63rd | T26th | CUT |
Hatton definitely has the talent to triumph in one of the majors. But when you look at his record, you can understand why he has his sights set on improving on the game’s biggest stages.
