No LIV Golf star has come closer to winning either of the last two majors than Tyrrell Hatton, with the Englishman particularly impressing at Oakmont last month.
Tyrrell Hatton went into 2025 with a real point to prove in the majors. He had been so impressive in his first year on LIV Golf, while he won twice on the DP World Tour between October and January. However, his only top five in a major came at the 2016 Open Championship.
He did well at The Masters. But Hatton was right in the mix to win the US Open at Oakmont until a terrible break on the 71st hole of the tournament.
The 33-year-old went into the final round of The Open Championship tied for fourth – albeit six shots off the lead held by Scottie Scheffler.
Tyrrell Hatton explains why he found the final round of The Open Championship ‘so disappointing’
Hatton took exception with the idea that Scheffler ended up lapping the field. But his Sunday was a poor one, as he posted a one over par round of 72 in Northern Ireland to end up in a tie for 16th.
The result leaves Hatton fourth in the qualification standings for the European Ryder Cup team. And ahead of LIV Golf UK this week, he admitted that he hoped to be a lot closer to securing his spot for Bethpage given what lies ahead on the PGA Tour.

“Well, you always want to play well in the majors, but I guess this year they had even more of an importance for me. It’s part of why I think Sunday’s round for me was so disappointing. It would have been nice to finish as high as possible to try and lock up being an automatic pick. Whereas now, the guys that are playing the FedEx, they’ve got three events to overtake me and the points are all pretty close between second and seventh,” he said.
“The US Open was a standout in terms of performance-wise, but it was nice to be a little bit higher up on the leaderboards this year. But I haven’t done anything different to achieve that. You still go out there and try your best.
“Yeah, this year was marginally better. Hopefully next year will be even better.”

Hatton is not going to be able to accumulate any more points. However, you would imagine that there is next to no chance of Luke Donald leaving him out of his side for New York.
What will certainly help is an impressive performance at JCB in the coming days. Hatton came agonisingly close to winning the event last year. And he was asked about what he made of the week 12 months ago.
“Yeah, the crowds were brilliant last year. I think certainly all the players enjoyed having that atmosphere to play in, and I’m sure this year will be no different. There will be a lot of support out there, and for me personally, I’ve got friends and family coming, so you’re looking forward to playing in front of them, and hoping that I can play well. It would be nice to go one spot better than last year,” he said.
“Yeah, that would be a tough ask, but hopefully, as I said, I can play well.”
Donald will be hoping that Hatton plays the next few events as if he needs to play his way into the team. He could be such an asset for the European side if he can find his best form.
