Tyrrell Hatton wasn’t able to even get close to Scottie Scheffler at The Open in the end.
Hatton finished a full 10 strokes behind Scheffler this week at The Open, despite threatening to challenge midway through his third round at Royal Portrush.
The 33-year-old Englishman is an extremely solid player, but there are question marks regarding whether he has what it takes to get over the line in major championships.
Hatton wasn’t able to hit his approach shots close enough to the hole at The Open, and that cost him dearly in the end.
Scheffler is on a different level to Hatton right now, and every other player in the game for that matter.

Hatton has admitted to being frustrated during The Open on numerous occasions, and perhaps he needs to be more like Scheffler in that regard.
Tyrrell Hatton disagrees with comment about Scottie Scheffler after The Open
Hatton is well known for being a straight shooter.
He never shirks difficult questions and sometimes stirs up controversy from seemingly innocuous questions as well!
Hatton was asked whether it’s difficult to keep up with Scheffler, after he ‘lapped the field’ at The Open.

He said: “I wouldn’t say winning by four is lapping the field. He’s obviously played amazing golf this week. He’s been amazing for the last number of years. So it’s not a surprise for anyone to see the standard that he’s setting. He’s been No. 1 for just over two years solid now, is it? Yeah, he’s a very special player.“
Scottie Scheffler vs Tyrrell Hatton: Open stats compared
Scheffler dominated The Open from Friday onwards.
Hatton had a real chance to get close to him at one point on Saturday, but came up short in the end.
Here is how their numbers from the week look:
| Stats | Scheffler’s rank | Hatton’s rank |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 48th | 31st |
| Strokes gained approach | 1st | 4th |
| Strokes gained around the greens | 125th | 94th |
| Strokes gained putting | 2nd | 77th |
| Strokes gained total | 1st | 17th |
Scheffler was clearly streets ahead of Hatton at The Open, and the stats above back that notion up.
Now the challenge for the Englishman will be to work even harder to try and close the gap.
