The FedEx St Jude Championship is in the books for another year and in the aftermath, Team USA has now had another member of its Ryder Cup team confirmed.
In the end, Justin Rose was the man to win out as Tommy Fleetwood once again came up agonisingly short, while Scottie Scheffler was unusually sloppy down the stretch to miss out.
Rose went back and forth with US Open winner, J.J. Spaun as they battled over a number of playoff holes.
But after Rose poured in from 10 feet, Spaun failed to convert from inside that to hand the Englishman a deserved win.
Of course, with the Ryder Cup around the corner, we’re likely to see more of Rose in action, while we already know that world number one Scottie Scheffler will be at Bethpage Black.
Now, though, after finishing runner-up again, J.J. Spaun has cemented his own place.

J.J. Spaun seals Ryder Cup spot for Team USA after the FedEx St Jude Championship
In reality, J.J. Spaun has come from nowhere in 2025 to become one of the USA’s best prospects heading into Bethpage Black.
Right now, he’s as good as anyone on that team barring Scheffler and with a US Open win under his belt and a number of impressive finishes, Spaun deserves his place.
Now, despite having lost out to Rose at TPC Southwind, the USA’s official Ryder Cup social team has confirmed Spaun’s spot in the 12.
J.J. Spaun can be Team USA’s ultimate wildcard
While he’s a US Open champion, J.J. Spaun is hardly the first name that rolls off the tongue if you speak to most golf fans about Team USA’s team.
However, now he’s confirmed as part of the team, you have to say he could be just what they need.
Team USA need some fresh faces from their big loss in Rome in 2023 and someone like Spaun, who will be completely new to the event and situation around it, could flourish.
| Rank | Player (Nationality) | Points |
| 1 | Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) | 3489.21 |
| 2 | Robert MacIntyre (Scotland) | 1709.94 |
| 3 | Tommy Fleetwood (England) | 1622.11 |
| 4 | Justin Rose (England) | 1545.72 |
| 5 | Rasmus Hojgaard (Denmark) | 1283.56 |
| 6 | Tyrrell Hatton (England) | 1279.33 |
Yes, his playoff record will be a concern – he lost two from two in 2025 – but in the main, his golf has been solid and he’s a deserved team member.
With the big names like Scheffler, Thomas and Schauffele reliable for Team USA, Spaun could end up being the wildcard that helps them bring home the trophy.
