Tony Finau is firmly in contention heading into the final two rounds of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Finau has been one of the most active players on the PGA Tour since the season started at The Sentry. Fresh off rumours that he was set to join LIV Golf, Finau finished 15th at Kapalua. The Salt Lake City native also placed tied for 36th at The American Express and missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

On the Monterey Peninsula, Finau looks set to challenge and is just four shots back of in-form leader Sepp Straka.

Strong winds challenged the top players on Friday, and with the greens fast, scoring proved difficult. Yet, with rainfall overnight, Finau believes Pebble Beach will be a very different course over the weekend.

What Tony Finau has said about Pebble Beach

Speaking during his post-round interview on Friday, Finau predicted Pebble Beach to change considerably.

“It’s going to change Pebble a lot. It’s unfortunate because Pebble is pure
right now, really pure,” he said.

“The ball is bouncing and anytime that’s the case at Pebble I think it’s
pretty magical to play. We’ll have to adjust, just adapt as we do out here and we’ll just have to do that on the weekend.”

Finau was perhaps fortunate to be playing Spyglass Hill on Friday. The course is situated slightly more inland, which means the wind was less of a contributing factor compared to Pebble. Nevertheless, the US Presidents Cup star took advantage.

Finau made five front-nine birdies to shoot 31. He would then card two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot 67 (five under).

It was a similar story for Finau at Pebble Beach on Thursday, where he took advantage of calmer conditions to post 67.

Scottie Scheffler also makes claim on Pebble Beach’s greens

World number one Scottie Scheffler also highlighted Pebble Beach’s firmness before Thursday’s first round. “The greens are quite a bit firmer, so if the rain holds off this week, I think it will continue to get firmer as the week goes on,” Scheffler said.

“Should be a lot of fun. These greens are small, and when they’re firm, they can be really challenging.”

With softer greens set to welcome the players on Saturday and Sunday, low-scoring is almost a formality and Scheffler, speaking after his second round, anticipates a much more predictable Pebble Beach.

“So I think if we get some rain overnight, I think they’re all going to be soft and that should help us predict what they’re going to be like,” he added.
