Tony Finau is one of a number of players within striking distance of Scottie Scheffler but ahead of the final round of the PGA Championship, Finau knows it’s a tough ask to catch the world number one.
Scheffler is three clear of his nearest rival in Alex Noren, while he sits five ahead of Jon Rahm and six ahead of Bryson DeChambeau.
Another player to be six back is Tony Finau, who found some form in round three to post a second consecutive 69 and get into the mix.
Finau is chasing a first major championship and knows he needs all the cards to fall his way to win at Quail Hollow.
Indeed, speaking to the media about Scheffler’s rise to the top, Finau admitted things will be tough.

Tony Finau gives verdict on Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship
Finau was in a buoyant mood as he made his way off the course at Quail after playing well.
However, when it came to actually winning, Finau admitted that the idea of catching Scheffler at the summit is a tough ask.
“Yeah, I mean, as I mentioned before, Scottie, he’s the best player in the world and he’s an incredible frontrunner because of how good his ball-striking is. He can ball strike his way into winning golf tournaments, even with an average putter. And so when he’s on top of the leaderboard, he’s extremely hard to catch but that’s the task that I’m presented with this week. It looks like Scottie is going to be leading after today,” Finau said.
“He’ll be a tough guy to catch tomorrow, but you know, we’ve got 18 holes to see what happens.”
Scottie Scheffler slip up would be a miracle at Quail Hollow
For all the will in the world, seeing a Scottie Scheffler collapse at Quail Hollow would not only be frustrating to watch, but also a bit of a miracle.
Scheffler has still been out working on his game even after round three and he very much appears to have found something in his swing again.
| Club | Scottie Scheffler’s average distance (yards) |
| Driver | 300 |
| Three wood | 270 |
| Three iron | 245 |
| Four iron | 226 |
| Five iron | 212 |
| Six iron | 198 |
| Seven iron | 184 |
| Eight iron | 170 |
| Nine iron | 156 |
| Pitching wedge | 144 |
| 50 degree wedge | 131 |

To win, someone is going to have to go close to a course record, or play well and rely on Scheffler not having his best and making mistakes.
Both those things seem unlikely right now and come Sunday evening, we’re likely seeing Scottie Scheffler lift the Wanamaker Trophy for the first time.
