Tommy Fleetwood has firmly established himself as one of the best golfers in the world over the past 12 months or so.

Fleetwood finally broke his duck on the PGA Tour by winning the Tour Championship back in August.

The 34-year-old Englishman was also part of the successful European Ryder Cup side at Bethpage Black this year, before winning on the DP World Tour in India in October.

Now he will be looking to finish his season strongly in Dubai.

Fleetwood posted his lowest ever round at the DP World Championship on Thursday – a seven-under par 65.

It just seems like nothing can go wrong with his swing right now, and it’s fair to suggest that he’s currently one of the best three players in the world.

However, who does Fleetwood think has been the best golfer of his generation?

Tommy Fleetwood says Rory McIlroy is the greatest golfer of his generation

Rory McIlroy is one of the greatest golfers of all time and he recently cemented his place in the history books by becoming only the sixth man ever to win the career Grand Slam.

Who is the better player: Rory McIlroy or Scottie Scheffler?

The 36-year-old’s 2025 season has been the stuff of dreams. He won three times on the PGA Tour including his dramatic triumph at The Masters in April.

McIlroy also won the Irish Open in September and the challenge for him now will be to remain motivated for the next decade, so that he is able to truly cement his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of all time.

Speaking during a DP World Tour production ahead of the Race To Dubai season finale, Fleetwood made his feelings on McIlroy very clear indeed.

Tommy Fleetwood says Rory McIlroy is the best golfer of his generation

“I do feel like Rory is the best of our generation. Whatever happens, he has cemented his place in the history of golf forever, but he’s got a lot more to give. I’m sure he’s going to achieve a lot more so we’ll see at the end.”

Shane Lowry and Justin Rose deliver Rory McIlroy verdicts

McIlroy’s good friend Shane Lowry suggested that the 2025 Masters champion is right up there with Seve Ballesteros now after his win at Augusta National.

He said: I think he’s one of the greatest golfers of all time. He’s won every big tournament there is to win.

He’s obviously won the Grand Slam now, I think he’s right up there with Seve.

Justin Rose offered his opinion on McIlroy as well, suggesting that the Northern Irishman has reached ‘the top of the tree’ in European golf.

Rose said: There were only five players before him who won the career Grand Slam.

For me, that’s what it’s all about. It is the ultimate achievement in our sport, so that puts him top of the tree in my mind in European golf.

McIlroy is clearly hugely respected by his peers and that’s no surprise really, given what he has achieved over the past 15 years.

He has 29 PGA Tour wins and 20 DP World Tour victories to his name, including five major championships.

McIlroy has also been a part of six successful European Ryder Cup teams. He has one of the most envied résumés in the history of the game and as Fleetwood said, he will undoubtedly go on to achieve much, much more.
