Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick will have high hopes for an Olympic medal finish in Paris this week.

The duo are representing Team GB at the Olympics, with Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick among 60 players taking on Le Golf National.

Fleetwood says the 1st and 10th holes could be troublesome, having played Le Golf National at the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The Englishman won all four of his matches to help Team Europe defeat Team USA in the French capital six years ago.

And he will now have his sights set on Olympic gold, as will compatriot Fitzpatrick, who first played in the Ryder Cup in 2016.

Tommy Fleetwood makes Olympic golf prediction

A traditional stroke play competition is taking place in Paris, but Fleetwood would love to try a new format at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

He is predicting big things for the iconic event, with the Briton telling Sky Sports Golf: “It’s the Olympics. It’s pretty much the biggest sporting occasion in the world.

“I’ve said it a few times now, I think for us in our generation, we as golfers, we’ve never had the option to dream of being at the Olympics, or playing in the Olympics or winning a gold medal.

“So for me, as an eight year old, 10 year old, 12 year old, I never dreamt that I could be part of the Olympics.

“But you’re seeing it now how special it is. I’m pretty sure everybody here, they would love to look back on their career with a gold medal, or any kind of medal on their mantelpiece.

“It’s something that’s very, very special. From now on, I think you’re going to see it grow and it’s going to continue to mean a lot really.

“Being able to have done this twice now, once you’ve been part of one, you know that it’s going to end eventually, but there’s no way you ever want to miss out on one.”

Matt Fitzpatrick agrees with Tommy Fleetwood’s Olympic claim

Fleetwood finished tied-16th in Tokyo last time out, with Xander Schauffele winning gold for the USA in Japan.

Fitzpatrick meanwhile is competing at his first Olympics in Paris, with the 2022 US Open champion delighted to be taking part in the event.

Team GB certainly have history at the Olympics, with Justin Rose clinching the gold medal at Rio 2016.

Fitzpatrick will be aiming to replicate that success, with the Englishman in agreement with Fleetwood that the tournament is only going to get more popular.

“I don’t see why you wouldn’t get behind it,” said Fitzpatrick. “It’s a chance to win an Olympic medal.

“The Olympics is once every four years, you don’t know how many you’re going to get to do, so I feel like even just being part of it is special in itself.

“But to win a gold medal, or any medal, is kind of a step above. I definitely think it’ll gain traction, and it’s probably an exciting time really.”
