Tiger Woods has opened up on his return to The Masters this year after withdrawing during the third round in 2023.
The majority of the golfing world was delighted to see the 15-time major champion back competing at Augusta, and there were some encouraging signs.
His first two rounds should provide reason to be optimistic. A one-over 73 on Thursday was solid, and his level par 72 on an extremely testing Friday was also impressive.
Over the weekend, it was clear the physical test was taking its toll. But, to have made the cut ahead of some of the world’s best shows how impressive his outing at The Masters really was.
Tiger Woods shares what was ‘awesome’ about The Masters this year
Woods appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday evening and was pleased with his outing at Augusta despite his weekend troubles.
He explained: “It was awesome. Just to be back playing again. There’s nothing else like it.
“I have been playing there since a teenager. There is nothing like driving down Magnolia Lane and seeing that and seeing the typography and the history of it.”
Major focus for Tiger Woods ahead of PGA Championship
It’s evident Woods’ focus isn’t on regular PGA Tour events. The 48-year-old is more than content competing in the year’s four majors to see if he can get one closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record.
His last major win, of course, came in 2019. At the time, many thought the Green Jacket would’ve kickstarted another dominant period.
However, further setbacks have ensued.
The 2024 outing at Augusta felt like a warm-up for Woods ahead of the final three majors of the year.
He now knows his body can make it through 72 holes when required. For Woods, everything should be geared towards the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open. Any further competitions would feel futile at this point.
