Tiger Woods’ first round at the 2024 US Open is in the bag and it was a mixed day for the former world number one.

Woods started very well and was among the early leaders before making the turn having dropped just the one shot.

However, Woods soon fell away as a disastrous run of five bogeys in seven holes ensured he was well down the pecking order and up against it heading into day two tomorrow.

As we all know, Woods has struggled all year long with injuries but there appeared to be something different about him this time, especially on those opening nine holes.

Tiger’s driving from the tee was near impeccable and his short game and putting looked on point, with just some wayward irons costing him.

But aside from his golf game, he also looked stronger in terms of the physical aspects of the round.

And that much was proven after the round as well, as Woods found more time in his day to go and practice on the range afterwards.

Tiger Woods takes ‘rare’ steps after finishing round one at the US Open

So far this year, we’ve seen Woods take off into the clubhouse and go and get his rest and recuperation work in as soon as he’s finished.

However, as pointed out by the popular Tiger Woods account on X, TWLegion, today he was straight off to the range for some more work.

Of course, Woods’ aim in this sort of practice session will have been to try and put right the wrongs of the day at Pinehurst.

But in an even more intriguing twist, Woods also took the unusual step of helping out one of his good friends and fellow struggler, Justin Thomas.

Thomas was one of the worst players in the entire field as he shot a dreadful seven over par.

But Woods was on hand to try and help his fellow American out, in a step that golf journalist James Colgan suggested is not something you often see at a US Open.

Clearly, then, Woods is feeling a bit better about himself in some way and the fact he was out on the range and not immediately into an ice bath or two, suggests he’s turned a corner.

With round two coming up, the golfing world will be hoping for some Tiger magic to see him into the weekend.
