Tiger Woods’ torrid major form continued after he missed the cut at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.
The three-time Open winner carded a six-over 77 to finish eight shots outside the cut line. Woods, however, wasn’t the only big name to struggle after Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau also failed to make the weekend.
Woods is now set to take an extended break from the game as he seeks to truly return to full fitness and play more frequently. The 48-year-old will next feature at the Hero World Challenge in December, a tournament he hosts.
However, Sky Sports commentator Wayne Riley believes Woods needs to play more regularly between now and the end of the year.
Tiger Woods to play 2025 Open Championship at Portrush

Speaking during his post-round press conference, Woods was asked whether he intends to play in the 2025 Open Championship, which takes place at Portrush in a year’s time.
A journalist asked: “Will we see you at Portrush for next year’s Open?”
Woods replied: “Yeah, definitely.”
Tiger Woods loves Open Championship golf
Despite struggling badly during the 2024 edition, Woods was quick to reiterate his love for Open Championship golf.
“I’ve won two Open Championships up here in Scotland, so I have always enjoyed playing up here, as well as the different types of links that Scotland brings and the challenges. I’ve missed playing Troon; it’s been a long time.
“I remember playing here way back in 97. I’ve had some good memories here.”
The attraction of Tiger, clearly, is still there—it’s now up to the greatest ever to return to full fitness and compete on a more regular basis on the PGA Tour. If Woods can participate in 10-15 events, his tournament sharpness will no doubt return.
The next six months will be absolutely vital for the 48-year-old moving forward.
