Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are set to engage in talks with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund as the Memorial Tournament gets underway at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

McIlroy and Woods are part of the PGA Tour Transaction committee looking to finally reach an agreement with the owners of LIV Golf; over a year has passed since the bombshell framework agreement between the two parties.

Deadlines have been and gone – and the golfing world is still no closer to knowing what the future will look like.

However, what’s become clear is that the framework agreement made on June 6 2023 was purely to prevent lawsuits and for talks to take place in good faith.

According to New York Times reporter Lauren Hirsch, Woods is travelling to New York on Friday to discuss the current PIF deal with the Saudis.

It’s believed McIlroy will be attending remotely, with the Northern Irishman currently competing in the Memorial Tournament – one of the PGA Tour’s signature events.

The Northern Irishman, once staunchly against LIV’s presence, has seemingly come around to the idea that unification is now a requisition.

β€œWhen I try to remove myself from the situation, and I look at the bigger picture, I think ultimately this is going to be good for the game of professional golf. It unifies it and secures its future,” McIlroy told Sky Sports after the original framework announcement.

Could this finally be the breakthrough golf needs?

Jay Monahan’s role as the PGA Tour commissioner has seen the American face criticism from all sides.

Many members are being left entirely in the dark over what’s occurring between the PGA and the breakaway tour’s financial arm.

Monahan has previously suggested the two parties are working together to unlock golf’s worldwide potential.

β€œOur negotiations are accelerating as we spend time together,” Monahan said. β€œWhile we have several key issues that we still need to work through, we have a shared vision to quiet the noise and unlock golf’s worldwide potential.”

What is now abundantly clear is that conversations over agreements and tours seemingly locking horns need to conclude.

For far too long, the global game has been brought into disrepute when, realistically, unity is required.
