Historically, golf has always been regarded as an expensive sport but every so often, things overstep the mark.

For the amateur player simply trying to get into the game and build up their equipment and everything else needed just to play, to the more seasoned player trying to make their way in the game and play the world’s best courses.

One of the most expensive aspects of the game are those green fees. Yes, there can be cheap and bargain courses out there but for some, the outlay is huge.

Still, while there’s an acceptance that golf can drain the pocket, once in a while something comes along that is bordering on the ridiculous.

And in keeping with that theme, it seems we’ve got a contender for the most expensive round of golf.

Top 100 golf course now set to cost $120,000 to play

Everyone who plays golf will know full well that to play some of the best courses in the world, you’re going to need to splash the cash.

Places like Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, St Andrews, Trump Turnberry and more all require hefty payments, albeit not completely unmanageable for the average golfer.

Now, though, it seems golf has gone to new heights with social media golf account UK Golf Guy revealing some extraordinary news about the Ardfin Golf Estate in Scotland.

Taking to X to reveal some changes to how to play the course, it’s claimed that Ardfin now requires a minimum of $60,000 a night – minimum two nights – to play the course.

Ardfin is renowned as being one of the best golf courses and estates in the world but the fact it’s costing north of $100,000 to play is mind-blowing. Furthermore, the idea of spending all that money to play and still having to pay for food, blows the mind further.

Nevertheless, people will no doubt flock to the course if they can afford it.

All about Ardfin Golf Course

Based on the Isle of Jura off the west of Scotland, Ardfin is well known in golfing circles as being one of the most picturesque courses around.

The course itself was designed by the legendary and well-respected Bob Harrison, who himself has spoken of his feelings on the course.

“I am convinced that it is one of the most beautiful and spectacular courses in the world, and the question then becomes whether I have given the holes the interest and strategic merit they deserve,” Harrison said previously.

Ardfin has hosted both the Scottish Boys and Girls Championships since it opened. As explained on their official website, the call came from the estate’s owners, who wanted Harrison to build them a world-class golf facility.

“In 2011, Bob Harrison received a call from Ardfin’s owner, Greg Coffey, who was keen to see a world class golf course built along the rugged cliffs of his Ardfin Estate. 48 hours later he was on a plane to Scotland, the first of 27 visits he made over 6 years until completion.

“Bob had built a fine reputation working with the Greg Norman Design Company for 21 years in Australasia as its head designer in the region, before setting out on his own. He has designed many beautiful natural courses, including Moonah and Ellerston and spectacular ocean-side ones like Nirwana in Bali, consistently ranked as “The Best Golf Resort in the Pacific Rim”. Ardfin was a rare challenge to design and build an exciting and inspiring course in a phenomenal setting, which Harrison has achieved with consistent high praise from all who have played the course.”

Still, at over $50,000 a night to play, the pressure was on Harrison really to get it right and he looks to have done just that.
