Scottie Scheffler is the world’s best golfer, and he is capable of hitting certain shots that other players can only dream of pulling off.
After watching Scheffler up close and personal over the past year or so, Ryan Gerard became obsessed with learning how to hit a shot which the world number one has perfected.
The 29-year-old has already won on the PGA Tour this season and now he has 20 wins to his name since February 2022, including four major championships.
Are you concerned about Scottie Scheffler right now?
He is really struggling with his first rounds right now…
Interestingly, though, Scheffler has been struggling in his first rounds on the PGA Tour recently.
Scheffler has posted three consecutive opening rounds of 72 or worse over the past three weeks – the first time he has ever done that in his career.
However, that didn’t stop him from recording two top-four finishes and a T-12 during those three tournaments.
Scheffler is someone whom every other PGA Tour player looks up to because of the way that he approaches tournaments and how he pulls off certain shots that seem impossible.
The shot Scottie Scheffler hits which Ryan Gerard is ‘obsessed’ with
One-time PGA Tour winner Ryan Gerard played with Scheffler during the final round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open in 2025.
And he seemingly learned a lot from the world number one golfer.
Gerard spoke to The Golf Channel this week, and talked about a shot that Scheffler has perfected which he has become truly obsessed with learning.
“A lot of guys, when they take speed off a golf club, the ball flight comes down,“ Gerard said.

“Scottie hits this shot with this smooth knockdown swing, but he launches it higher, spins it more, and it bridges the gap between two full numbers. I’ve kind of been obsessed with this shot since I played with him the final round of Houston last year, and I’ve gone about learning how to hit it.
“The ball is a little more forward in my stance, I choke down on it and feel like I’m slowing down through the ball and speeding up after.
“That launches it higher with less speed. I don’t have the extra spin like Scottie, but it’s coming out higher and softer.
“I think it’s going to serve me well at Players, Augusta, PGA, U.S. Open.“
Do you think Scottie Scheffler will beat Tiger Woods’ consecutive cuts record?
He's not even halfway there right now…
The shot that Gerard is explaining almost defies physics.
Is Scottie Scheffler’s in-between shot the difference maker?
How on earth is it possible to hit a high shot with spin while choking down on the grip with a three-quarter swing?
Scheffler has been the best iron player in the game over the past three seasons.
And the numbers support that notion…
| Year | Scheffler’s strokes gained approach rank |
| 2025 | 1 |
| 2024 | 1 |
| 2022/2023 | 1 |
| 2021/2022 | 4 |
To be so consistently good with his irons, the 29-year-old obviously had to master the ‘in-between’ shot.
And as Gerard explained, Scheffler has managed to achieve that.
Perhaps the shot that the world number one hits when he’s in-between yardages is the one that has enabled him to separate himself from everyone else in the game.
