If you’re Jack Nicklaus, then there’s probably not much you haven’t been asked about the game of golf over the years.
The 18-time major winner has been there and done it all and has, over the decades, produced some memorable moments both as a player and now a former player.
For many, Nicklaus is considered the greatest golfer of all time alongside Tiger Woods.
With 33 majors between them and countless other wins, it’s hard to argue against anyone who says any different.
However, while Nicklaus and Woods are often mentioned in the same breath, Claude Harmon has revealed that Nicklaus actually gets annoyed when fans overlook him for one element of his game.
Why Jack Nicklaus gets annoyed at golf fans
You would assume that with the wealth of knowledge Jack Nicklaus has in the game, that fans and players would quiz him on all aspects of the game.
And to an extent, that might well happen.
However, speaking on the Son of a Butch podcast, Claude Harmon has shared that when it comes to putting, Jack Nicklaus actually gets a bit offended when people don’t ask for tips and instead, want to be more like Tiger Woods or others.
“I have heard that one of the things that drives Jack Nicklaus crazy is that for everything everybody asks Jack about, nobody would ever try and putt like Jack,” Harmon explained.
“He was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, pressure putter of all time with a very non conventional method. Everybody wants to putt like Slick Rick or Tiger. But Jack was one of the greatest with a method nobody would use!”

There isn’t much in it and it is of course, subjective in a way as well. But on the surface, it seems hard to suggest there’s been a better putter in PGA Tour history than Tiger Woods. And that’s not to disparage Nicklaus, who was brilliant in his own right.
His ability to make huge putts in big moments was almost unmatched at one point and he consistently put tournaments to bed by making big putts when it mattered.
Between the years of 2004 and 2009, Woods is regarded by many to have been the best we’ve ever seen.
Indeed, in 2004 , his stats were simply impeccable. Woods ranked 22nd in one putt percentage, 1st in strokes gained putting, and 2nd in total putting.
He was 7th in three-putt avoidance, and 6th in average distance of putts made.
Those numbers, coupled with the years of consistency he showed, make Tiger Woods the greatest putter we’ve seen on TOUR.
