Justin Thomas says which part of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy’s game he’d take for himself ahead of the PGA Championship

Justin Thomas might be in fine form himself right now but even he has admitted he’d take an element of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler’s game if he could.

Thomas won the RBC Heritage to get back to the winner’s circle recently and ahead of the PGA Championship, he’s among many people’s favourites to win.

The American has won the PGA twice before, including in 2017 at Quail Hollow, and he will be desperate to kick on again.

Of course, to win out, Thomas will need to see off the likes of Scheffler and McIlroy, as well as playing well himself.

And when speaking to the press prior to teeing off this week, Thomas was asked just which part of their game he would take.

Thomas was speaking to the press ahead of this week’s big tee off and was asked out of all the players on TOUR, which elements he’d take from someone else’s game if he could.

And typically, Thomas named Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as his ideals to steal from.

“I’d probably…I’d go with either Rory or Scottie and their driver,” Thomas admitted.

Going further into the chat about Rory and Scheffler, Thomas was then quizzed on if ‘competitive jealousy’ fuels him at all.

And for Thomas, he admitted it very much does.

“A lot. I just remember that a lot from my first couple years on Tour and Jordan having a lot of success and playing well. It is, over the course of your career, you’re obviously…it’s not like, you know, when you’re in college and someone turns pro early and they’re winning Tour events and you’re like, I’ve beaten him before, that kind of thing. We all obviously beat each other quite often,” Thomas said.

“But I have a lot of faith and a lot of ability – or trust in my ability and feel like I can – I have confidence in I feel like what I can do.

“I told Jill, after watching the Masters, it was like, of course – obviously I knew I always wanted to win the Grand Slam, wanted to win all the majors. But for some reason watching somebody do it first hand, it reminded me almost of, damn, I forgot, I really do want to do that. It’s weird. It’s something I think all of us, some certain people maybe hit us different ways in terms of jealousy or drive or whatever you want to call it.

“Yeah, any time someone wins that isn’t me, if it’s a friend, I’m obviously happy for them, but there’s always going to be a part of me that’s jealous and wishes it was me. I think you’d be crazy to say otherwise.”

Driving is a huge part of the modern game of golf and there are few that do it better than McIlroy and Scheffler when they get it right.

However, if you put the best parts of Thomas, McIlroy and Scheffler together with driver this year, you’d have the ideal golfer.

McIlroy ranks highly in distance and strokes gained off the tee, but Scheffler ranks high in accuracy and distance from the edge of the fairway.

Thomas, meanwhile, is pretty much middle of the road in all metrics with driver and putting them all together, you’d be far away from perfect.
