The PGA Championship is coming up next for the biggest stars in golf but before a round has even got underway, Hideki Matsuyama has left golf fans seriously confused.

Quail Hollow plays host to the tournament for the first time since 2017 when Justin Thomas won his first major and the 2025 event is shaping up to be a fine tournament in itself.

What makes a great tournament, is open to debate. But one of the things that can impact any event on any tour around the world, is the weather.

Right now over in North Carolina, the weather gods are playing havoc and the heavens have well and truly opened, to the point where fans have been told not to come at all for the initial practice sessions.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t appear to have stopped some of the players out in Charlotte, with Hideki Matsuyama among those to brave the elements.

However, while Matsuyama is out there in the rain, his decision has left golf fans on social media utterly baffled.

Golf fans can’t believe what Hideki Matsuyama has been doing ahead of the PGA Championship

Every golfer at any level of the game needs to practice. And in getting that practice in, it means competing in all conditions.

However, sometimes, it’s simply time to call it a day and go inside and after footage emerged of Matsuyama on the greens in torrential rains, golf fans have been calling him out.

Matsuyama can be seen on the putting surfaces as the rain bounces down at Quail Hollow.

But rather than be impressed, golf fans have instead labelled the Japanese star as ridiculous.

While another couple of fans suggested Matsuyama’s actions were not necessary.

“Love the guy but this is beyond pointless” one fan wrote, while another had the same feelings, adding: “Beyond pointless. What does he get out of this? Being drenched and miserable is all I see from this”

While another suggested he’d get the same information out of simply going inside.

“Just go and putt in your hotel room. C—t”

Another fan called Matsuyama’s efforts ‘silly’, while another suggested he could actually make himself poorly.

“Brother it’s a Monday. I get being committed, but this is just dumb. Could give himself a cold and f—- his week up.”

While finally, another fan suggested it was simply a waste of time.

“He will never have a putt on a green like that, so it is all show & a waste of time”

Could the weather help Rory McIlroy at Quail Hollow?

Rory McIlroy is one of the favourites going into the tournament and his record and the ability he has to hit it so long helps him around Quail.

With wet conditions now looking more than likely, that could aid McIlroy even more as he will be able to hit it longer than his opponents and then have the soft greens to take aim at.

Of course, it could also hinder McIlroy, who has struggled in high winds in the past so that is something he will need to be wary of.

But with the amount of rain already and conditions not looking too great for the week either, McIlroy could well have his way again.

As for Matsuyama here, well, there has to be some method to the madness but to the naked eye, it does seem utterly pointless behaviour.
