The big question surrounding the PGA Tour heading into 2025 concerns whether Scottie Scheffler will be able to have anything like the season he has had in 2024.

Of course, Scottie Scheffler produced one of the all-time great seasons this year. The world number one won eight times worldwide, with the highlights being a second victory at the Masters, becoming the first player to retain the Players Championship, and an Olympic gold medal. Scheffler also won the Tour Championship for the first time in his career.

Scheffler enjoyed the kind of dominance not seen since Tiger Woods’ peak. So it is going to take something special for the 28-year-old to get anywhere near replicating his achievements in 2025.

But perhaps it is another player who may go on and dominate on the PGA Tour in 2025.

Justin Thomas backed to win Hero World Challenge and rival Scottie Scheffler in 2025

Scheffler goes into the final round of the Hero World Challenge one shot behind Justin Thomas. Thomas has looked a lot more like his old self at Albany, posting rounds of 66, 67 and 66. The 31-year-old caught the eye as he drove the green on the par four seventh on Saturday.

While Tom Kim, and perhaps even Keegan Bradley, cannot be ruled out, it does appear highly likely that the winner on Sunday will come from either Thomas or Scheffler. And speaking on Sky Sports, coach Simon Holmes not only backed Thomas to win, but he also tipped the two-time major champion for a brilliant 2025 season.

“Well, I think Thomas is still the underdog. I’m going to go with the underdog, that he takes out [Scheffler] because of that Tiger catalyst, here’s the event, and JT has the Scottie Scheffler year next year,” he said.

How many PGA Tour wins Thomas has in his career

Thomas has been far from his best over the last couple of years. He could certainly have few complaints after being left out of the Presidents Cup team by Jim Furyk ahead of the event at Royal Montreal.

But the talent is obvious. He won five times in 2017. And there have been some promising signs in the last couple of months, with Thomas coming second at the ZOZO Championship.

Justin Thomas’ PGA Tour wins

2016 CIMB Classic

He is definitely one of the players who can move himself back amongst the very best if he can get his entire game to click. As Holmes suggests, winning the Hero would perhaps provide the perfect launchpad to a phenomenal season.
