The Open is up there with The Masters as one of the best events on the PGA Tour. The links courses bring a unique challenge to the top players in the world.

Key storylines to follow on day one of The Open 2024

Is this Rory McIlroy’s time?

Anyone who follows golf knows that Rory McIlroy is one of the best in the business, and has been for a long time. However, the world number two has not won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship. Could this be his time to finally win another? He will need to get off to a good start.

How will Tiger Woods look?

Having finished 60th at The Masters in April, Tiger Woods has since missed the cut at the PGA Championship and the US Open. Nobody expects him to compete for the Claret Jug, but wouldn’t it be great if he made it to the weekend? He will be playing alongside Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in a must-see grouping.

Can Robert MacIntyre go back-to-back?

Robert MacIntyre was spectacular last weekend at the Scottish Open, sinking a difficult birdie putt on the 18th green to win the trophy. The Scotsman will be looking to win on home soil for the second week running at Royal Troon, and he will certainly have the spectators on his side.

Scottie Scheffler returns

Scottie Scheffler has not been in action since his success at the Travelers Championship almost a month ago. The best player in the world is usually in fine form anyway, but a well-rested Scheffler could be dangerous for the rest of the field.

There is a chance of light rain on and off throughout the day but that will not affect the players too much.
